Ha.

Funny thing is, we have NEVER had any major maintenance issues with our boat’s in the past. ...ALWAYS trailer issues.

Sooooo, we purchase this 2005 263 that had a brand NEW trailer under it thinking we will leave any maintenance woe’s behind us. Who would have “thunk” an engine pull was in the works. :o

Not sure which is worse? Boat or trailer issues? We had our share of trailer issues...made this girl a stress case for a bit this summer.

It's always something. And I tell myself it could always be worse!

Trailer issues are just the pits. THE PITS!

I honestly mumble to myself and walk around the trailer before any trip a dozen times repeatedly checking the same things.

Absolutely the pits.. Finally the weekend, and people have an afternoon to enjoy...and then trouble..
Ever look at the tires on new RV trailers?
The manufacturer's choice are always the cheapest tires, and maxing out the weight they can carry. Brand new huge trailers on little tires squatting down and begging for a break.
No wonder theres an RV on the side of the interstate about every 100 miles.

My neighbor is a tire dealer and has always told me to junk them after 5 years, even if they look brand new.

I'm following your advice on my 262 Tusc. Looking at the date codes, my tires will be 5 years old next spring. So the baby gets new shoes!

Had an rv of some type for 35 years, only time I broke down was a wheel bearing on a trailer that went out. On my current motorhome, which I bought new in 2015, I was going to go by the 5 year rule on tires. Last month, with 20,500 miles, I had to replace the two front tires and get an alignment, $1,700.

I have to say that when I got my Cobalt, trailer problems on my old boat was a prime reason. I thought about just trying to get a new trailer but the boat was a 2001 & just didn't see how that would make sense.

Bottom line, there's no doubt that tires & bearings on boats and rv's have been my biggest problems and worries.

It doesn't help that ST tires are junk to begin with and only get worse from there....have I mentioned that I hate trailer tires?

I've read that some rv trailer owners are advocating the use of LT tires instead of ST tires. Have never done this. Maybe some tire experts out there have some ideas.

LTs are good, I believe some 5th wheel and similar RVs come with them from the factory. I struggled finding LTs in a suitable size for a boat trailer, since most boat trailers come with 14" wheels. There's plenty of ST sizes available for 14s. Stepping up to a 15" opens a few options for LTs but they are not common and can get pricey.

As long as they are rated properly (by derating marked load capacity by 10%), P tires work too. I just put a set of P235/75R15s on my trailer, 108 load index. People will talk all day about trailers needing ST tires (or LT) due to higher sidewall stiffness and lateral loads and other stuff, but I can't comprehend how a 5500lb SUV with P tires on the steering axle turning a sharp corner at 20-25mph puts less lateral load on a tire than a 6000 boat swaying a bit after a lane change or whatever. They also say that ST has special compounds to protect them from UV and to help keep them from dry rotting since trailers tend to sit more. Sure maybe there's a marginal difference there, but put a cover on either one to keep it out of the sun and I bet there's next to no difference between the speed of the dry rot.

DOT/NHTSA even revised their 49 CFR 571-110 standard in 2016 to allow for P tires on trailers so long as the load on the tire doesn't exceed the marked capacity divided by 1.1.

Nobody bats an eye when a ST tire throws a tread, or breaks a belt and ends up with a huge bubble on the side, even when they are only a year or two old. Sure it's annoying, but everyone just sucks it up and goes to buy the exact same thing again because it's a trailer, it has to have trailer tires right? The guy at Discount said so. If the same failures happened with any kind of regularity in a car, there would be recalls and lawsuits and all hell would break loose. Firestone anyone? In probably half million miles of driving in my life, I've had maybe 3 or 4 flats on cars, never had a tire actually fail. In probably 15,000 to 20,000 miles of towing, I've never had a flat, but have had at least 10 trailer tires fail, a couple catastrophically. One even threw a tread completely off, caught a glimpse of it in the rearview mirror about 30 feet up in the air.

Sorry for the rant, I just happen to think trailer tires are complete junk and are a ticking time bomb. If I can help it I will never buy another one in my lifetime. Have I mentioned that I hate trailer tires?

I'm thinking and hoping the GY endurance solves lots of these trailer tires issues. How many of us tow over 65mph that your ST tire is rated for. Umm awful quite. Yep we advise the tires. I think most of the trailer tires last 5 years. How many change there tires on the the cat mute than that.Yep us. So bad rap I don't know I think they do a pretty good job.
