Yea sure but i see lots for sale with just a single outboardTuscany wrote: Wed Feb 07, 2018 5:35 am IMO, we compare 380 vs. 430.
That difference is like splitting hairs.
8 1/2’ beams aren’t wide enough for twin stern drives, and power options are profitable and definitely sell.
How about the option of two 300s on an R5?
Twin 350s on the back of an R7?
Three for a R30?
Four for an R35 or maybe an R40 down the road?
Plus, if you go to coastal areas, EVERYONE runs outboards on boats this size.
The big boats run diesel.

Now who do you think is buying new boats this year?
Florida and Texas.
That's a lot of outboards.

IMO,if I could have had a set of twin 350s on our R7, i would have found a way to deal with a shorter platform.Big Block Power wrote: Wed Feb 07, 2018 6:21 amTable Rockin wrote: Wed Feb 07, 2018 6:17 am Yep ive read articles about this but still dont get it. But for us lake guys, the simplicity of a stern drive will probably be available for quite some time.
It does make perfect sense why Merc sits on the outdated 8.2L.. They are “all in” on the Verado as the future.

Re: Cobalt models pared back
Saltwater registration of boaters dictates a majority of Boat manufactures thinking . Other than what we all know about fresh water cooled .. closed system.. bla bla ...The guys that says "I flushed it every time out". Haha its all the other items the owner cant maintain that will haunt you.
Its the salt air that creates a mess on interior trim right??
Its also destroys in a short time the Alternators, starters.. mounts and every other engine piece that exposes itself to corrosion just being in the climate. Even if the boat just sits on a hoist never touching the water!
I personally don't like the look of twin eggbeaters and weird sound but if I lived on a salt water-way or coast. I would only own a Outboard due to knowing whats coming.

My cobalt dealer is also a Scout dealer so i see the trend but i still dont get the center counsel idea on a lake boat unless your just a fisherman.Tuscany wrote: Wed Feb 07, 2018 6:24 amTR, check out what they are doing in other areas of the country.Table Rockin wrote: Wed Feb 07, 2018 6:17 am Yep ive read articles about this but still dont get it. If I had daddy’s millions to spend, I would be ordering a new Formula, and this is where they are going...

Re: Cobalt models pared back
When I was shopping boats a few years back I came oh-so-close to getting one of these. I'm sure glad the stars didn't align or it would have happened! It had an outboard and the allure of no winterizing and using it basically all year was stronger than the ittybitty "platform" on both sides of the motor. It handled like a sports car though, until you hit rough water. Then it handled like a sports car running across a rough pasture.

Re: Cobalt models pared back
I'll say when I was boat shopping I actually kicked around the idea of a Tritoon just for the outboard and no winterizing. I thought it would be nice to be able to take advantage of those occasional 65-70ish degree days we get in the winter here. Until I test drove one and it was like driving a barge. Guess I will just have to deal with staring at my boat on those days. I've never gotten the chance to drive a v-bottom boat with an outboard. But like others have said I don't like the look of them unless you get a center console boat with multiple outboards.

Re: Cobalt models pared back
My Dad has a 28' Bennington tri-toon with a 420 HP I/O merc and I will say its actually a pretty nice boat. It planes out in like .1 secs and has lots of acceleration and takes the Lake Ozarks waves pretty well. I have a natural bias against toons but if I went that route something like that would be the one. Throw in an arch tower and they become lots sexier.

Sure they look good but they're like steering a mattress! One of our closest friends has a tritoon with a 300 horse Mercury and I like it as long as he owns it. I don't want to have to drive that thing!
