Hydro Hoist Bunk Settings

Post by ph2ocraft »

So I hated the way my lift installer left the bunks. The boat strikes would sit right on the bunks.
A few other observations noted while the strakes sat on the bunks. Boat would tilt after I had 3 beers because it wouldn’t self center. The windshield would be 1/2 inch from hitting the dock cover, the floats would be lower in the rear oh and the outdrive was an inch from water contact.

By moving the forward bunk supports outward I was able to get the front of the hull lower in the bunks.
The bunks now sat flat on the hull.
I have about 3 inches between windshield frame and dock cover.
Outdrive is about the water an additional 2-3 inches and shifting the weight forward allows my floats to sit more level.
It looks better, sits as it should and now I can sleep at night:-)

Looks good pal.. bunk contact looks better now and you won't put a push on the sides now.

You will want to make sure you can see the bunk just past the transom about a inch is fine. If the bunks are too far forward you can develop a hook or warp in the hull.( it gets thin about 6 inches inward)

We use a stop line as I pull in on the starboard cleat. with a front line to the rear cleat.
Its considered a " spring line setup" once you connect both cross lines it's goes up same spot every time without touching it.

Makes me a little nervous with how close those metal cross beams are to your hull, but you obviously have it under control. Glad to see it all "fits".

Where are the stringers in relation to bunk placement? Best practice for trailer bunk position is to put them under the stringers, I'd imagine that translates to hoist position as well.

You have my curiosity.
My bunks are a full foot short of the hull end.
Yikes!!
So this is bad news and they should definitely go past the end (transom)?

The photo is deceptive, there’s an easy 4 inches between the metal support and hull.

The point is to support the weight of the engine and drive. Cobalt likes to use extended sponsons that go past the transom. My trailer bunks go to the end of the transom (so they support the full weight of the engine and drive) but do not extend to the end of the sponsons. When I set up my trailer, some on a different site wanted them to go all the way back but personally I'm comfortable with where they are. The sponsons don't support any weight.

Yep
He’ll be here to repair it on Wednesday. There is also another tiny chunk missing towards the rear.
Great observation.

The other thing I had done was to raise my bunks about 6 inches this year. With my boat fully loaded the skeg was in the water about 2-3 inches. Drove me crazy. I had plenty of head room and I had him lower the lift so that I could launch with no problem.

When I get my new lift I'm having them install it with the optional lower arms for backing in. Then everyone can just step off the dock onto the swimdeck when boarding. It'll be easier to put the cover on too.

After reading this thread I'll have to make sure they get the bunks placed right! Hopefully I'll get it in another month or so. They're building the new slips now
