Starter Battery vs House Battery

Post by jeffmeag »

Hey all, I purchased a two lead permanent battery charger/maintainer to install on my 2017 R5 to make keeping the batteries good during the winter. Reading the instructions is appears as though it needs to be installed with one specific lead going to the starter battery and the other to the house battery. My problem is, I don't know which is which. Can anyone help with this? FYI, this is the charger i have: ProMariner 43012 ProSport 12 12 Amp, 12/24 Volt, 2 Bank Generation 3 Battery Charger

I had the same problem when I installed the same charger but the 20 amp model. At the end of the day I don’t think it really matters other than to dedicate which battery gets priority charging. Since I use a battery switch my starter can be either. At the end of the day I flipped a coin and hooked it up. No problems after several months.

Can the dual bank chargers be used on just a single battery? For now I only have one but will probably add a second battery later and would rather not have to repurchase a charger.

Check with Pro Mariner, but I'm pretty sure they can't be used on a single Bobo.

Bite the bullet and add the second battery. It's cheap insurance.

I would think you would be able to use dual bank on 1 battery. Hook up one bank to your battery and cap the other bank. Not the best set up, but should work. Best advise is to follow Driller's suggestion and call Pro marine or add the other battery.

Has anyone installed a second battery in their boat, themselves? I was wonder if this would be a good DYI project. :geek:

I have not installed a second battery but I believe it is a good DYI project.
Heres a link to give you somewhat of an idea whats involved. (I'm sure there are better links out there.)

Plus it’s a great review for us boaters with dual batteries to make sure everything is still connected properly.
Thanx for the post, bfun220. 👍

I actually did a 3 battery system in my old boat. I had 2 amps 1 to power my speakers then 1 for my sub. So I ran 1 battery to just start the boat then 2 for the stereo. The 2 were just inline. All 3 controlled by a switch

Excellent idea but hopping 2 will suffice my limited radio needs. Does anyone know the brand of switch Cobalt uses and where a good place to buy?

Perko is the brand that has always been installed by the factory on all of our boats.

$35-50 bucks depending on where you purchase.
