Won't shift into neutral

Post by Domino »

I have 2013 262 with only 115 hours, used boat couple of weeks ago,it ran great, parked on sand bar for few hours, when heading home shifter would not go into neutral, therefore would not crank, forced it into neutral with key turned on and it cranked in gear and got us home.Any ideas?

The rear cover of the drive comes off pretty easy I would look back there to see if anything is sick or if you can move it freely. Check the cable to and see if it moves freely.

Hey Domino. Welcome to the CobaltChat forum. So glad you found us!

Sorry to hear about your shifting linkage issue. 90% of the time that comes down to lubrication. If it’s difficult to shift while the boat is running but not when the engine is off, then it’s the shift interrupter that could be the culprit. What brand and type of drive do you have?

Since your engine was off, it’s most likely old lubricant binding it. If you disconnect the linkage from the drive, does it still bind? If so then the issue is not in the outdrive.

We can troubleshoot from there after you check that.

Once again, welcome aboard mate.

Domino, did the shifter actually shift when you were pulling/pushing against it or did the key just start working? It could be that the shifting mechanism is ok and its just the neutral safety switch is stuck. The neutral safety switch is behind the controller (at least it is on the non EVC controllers - I'm not sure about yours, which is probably EVC).
