Who is using this for a chart plotter? How well does it work?
I am debating this on a ipad pro to use for the few times I want or need a chart plotter

I used it prior to purchasing a chart plotter and it is still my backup. On the iPhone it is a little small, should be ok on an iPad.

Then why did you move to a chart plotter? Only due to the iPhone size?Driller wrote: Sun Apr 22, 2018 11:27 am I used it prior to purchasing a chart plotter and it is still my backup. On the iPhone it is a little small, should be ok on an iPad.
I am only considering this because we have a 12" ipad pro just setting around doing nothing

There was also a problem with having to refresh the screen when it timed out. Might be a setting for this, but if there is in the app. I couldn’t find it. Plus having to keep the iPhone up on the dash and manage it while driving at night.
The app works great though and a few of the members use it. See this thread.

Re: Navionics
iPads don't do well in the sun. When they get hot the screen can go black and then....no chartplotter. I just installed one of the SIMRAD Go units
https://www.simrad-yachting.com/simrad/ ... r-no-xdcr/ You can order it without the transducer if you don't need the fish finer functions....I don't. Install was super easy, antenna is built in and it accepts all chart formats. It has Wi-Fi capability so when you are close to a signal it will download charts or even transfer them from your iPad. And the best part....full touchscreen technology. The only button on the unit is on/off.
I recently installed the 5" model on my 1985 Cobalt CM23. In hindsight I could have gone with the 7".

Me 3 but the GO 5 is plenty for my needs. Still playing with it, I've only had it on for about 10 minutes.

Judd Myers - I'm looking for a 12" iPad Pro if you are interested in selling yours. That is, if it doesn't have chart plotting duty.

I should say I mainly used the app at night, so heat, brightness, etc. wasn’t an issue for me.juddmyers wrote: Sun Apr 22, 2018 11:35 amThen why did you move to a chart plotter? Re: Navionics
I think the 5" will work fine for me as well. The 7" would have filled the space a bit more.Ytmsn wrote: Sun Apr 22, 2018 2:03 pm Me 3 but the GO 5 is plenty for my needs. Still playing with it, I've only had it on for about 10 minutes.
I think these SIMRAD GO units are going to catch on with boaters that have smaller panels yet still want a built in unit. I see this doing for navigation instruments what flat panel TVs did for boating, I think the flat panel TV was one of the biggest space savers ever for boats....not to mention the weight.

Re: Navionics
I may go with a simrad or garmin unit if this doesn't work. Just can't see not trying it since I have the device just sitting here and it will cost me 1/5 of the money. I can't imagine heat being an issue as it will only be used while under way. They say screen glare is solved with polarized sun glasses, but I obviously haven't tried it yet.

If you have a cabella's near you go check out their bargain cave. I found a garmin display unit for 100 bucks that already had maps on it. They had others also, but I don't have room for a very big one in my 220.

Re: Navionics
It looks like the Simrad comes with Navonics and Insight charts. Again, I've only played around with it for 10 or 15 minutes but it seems like Insight maybe what I end up staying with.

Re: Navionics
YT have you ordered the extra C-MAP or Navionics charts yet or are you going to stay with the Insight the unit came with for a while?Ytmsn wrote: Mon Apr 23, 2018 3:46 pm It looks like the Simrad comes with Navonics and Insight charts.
