Pulling from the pylon and the tower

Post by 2ridgebacks »

Can anyone advise what the pull rating is on the transom mounted ski pylon? What about the tower? From the reading I have done, NONE of the tower manufacturers are okay with towing any inflatables from the tower due to excessive loads. I know Cobalt is high end, but I'm not super impresses but the pylon mounting. I have 3 young kids and will be towing a lot. I realize that Cobalts are dedicated tow boats, but I don't want a loose tower, cracked fiberglass, or a loose pylon. Any info or opinions appreciated!

I don't have solid data for you. I would call Cobalt directly for firm facts. Towing inflatables, especially when loaded down with kids is not something I would put on an arch, especially if you own an R series with its super thin gunwales, or any boat for that matter. There can't be a lot in there to take the sudden torque from the huge drag of a wide float against the waves loaded down with weight.
I'm not sure what boat you own, but the rear mounted peg in an R series looks like it would pull a car out of a ditch without an issue, and it's mounted in an area that has the reinforcement to hang the boat.

Why would you want to tow an inflatable by the arch anyway?

I have an R5 and pull a 3-person tube and knee board from the pylon. Was initially concerned about the rope dragging through the wake during turns but this has turned out to be a "non issue." Tried the knee board from the tower but the kids liked the pylon better, and it made it was easier to adjust the rope length. We have a tower and I use it to pull a wakeboard. I don't remember the language on the sticker, but there is a caution sticker near the all around light/pylon on the tower that cautions against pulling inflatables.

I forgot I had the OM in digits. It's actually a warning label. Language includes, "This tower is designed to tow a wakeboarder. Do not tow other boats,
tubes, parasails, etc..."

I can look at my tower tonight but I believe is 250lbs being towed from the tower. Wakeboard only also. The pylon is a non issue I never saw a limit on it. I personally wouldn't worry about that it's pretty strong. I pulled a 15 foot tube no issues. The rope doesn't drag from the pylon either. I have a tube that you could use that helps prevent the drag. It looks like a football never used it on this boat.

This pylon? Dealer said no problem. Don't have the apecs but "seems" plenty stout.

This is the only warning sticker left on my tower. Not sure if it had any others.
