Glove Box? That's not a glove box.

Post by gwestphall »

Hi folks,
Just took delivery of a 2004 Cobalt 240. Very low hours and a really nice boat. Had it out on Muskegon lake and Lake Michigan over the weekend. Really nice weather finally. I am curious as to where you folks store things like your wallet, phones, car keys, boat papers, etc when you get on your boat. The glove box has absolutely no room in it except for the stereo. Am I missing something here? Is there some sort of secret compartment I'm not aware of. Help.
Thanks,
Greg

Welcome from Oklahoma. Early in the spring I sold a 2003 240. I kept all of my stuff like that in the compartment next to the transom step. The same place I kept my trash can. The little shelf to the side was handy for glasses keys and wallets.
Do you have any pictures of your boat? Post them up!

Thanks for the quick reply. I thought about that compartment but Am concerned that some of my guests will inadvertently toss their wallet in the trash instead of the rectangular white tray. It would be nice if there was something near the helm or passenger seat. The engineers at Cobalt have thought of everything else. I'll get some pics posted shortly.
thanks again

I have a 2011 242 with the same problem. With the stereo mounted there just a little storage space to the left and right. My wife keeps all of her stuff there. I carry a little day pack with me with all my goodies and keep it by the helm.

It used to be a camelbak, but I took the bladder out and use it as a day bag.

The fact that it has Red Fire on it prohibits it from becoming a man purse.

Where else can you mount a marine radio. What if you stored the clicker for the radio in the glove?

Thanks folks. Nice banter. I was thinking of picking up one of those waterproof Plano boxes and then throw it under one of the front seats as suggested, I guess that probably makes the most sense for now. I'm thinking that there needs to be something near the helm or opposite side to stow sunglasses and minor things. Sure, it would be nice if it locked but that is secondary. Just a small compartment with a flip lid that things won't fall out of. The space between the underside of the dash and above the fire extinguisher might be a good spot to put a small compartment. It would be nice if it looked factory. I don't want it to look cheesy or interfere with knees or access to circuit beakers etc.

Do you have a cubby next to you with a cupholder. That's where I throw some of my stuff. And the rest in the glove box.

I have thought about mounting a shaving style kit/bag or something similar, with a couple of velcro strips, on top of that strip above the controls, right up against the glass. That way I could take it with me back and forth. I'd keep keys, wallet, phone, glasses, change and any other small crap that you end up with all the time.

I'll post a picture of it when I get it done

No no Matt. I've seen your Fanny pack. Except in California it should be called a junk box.

In Oklahoma it's called a shaving kit bag.

If your looking to stay out of the fanny pack club you could look at motorcycle windshield bags. And use some 3M Dual Lock Reclosable Fastener.
