Texas Red Mud

I’m getting rid of that Texas red mud on the hull. I worked pretty hard with some light stuff and finally gave in and ran and got some On & Off today. Anyone used it? This guy is impressed.

Now for below the waterline.

It’s from West Marine. $12 I think. I did give toilet bowl cleaner a go per you recommendation. It was no match for these stains though. My sauces (hot, vinyl and conditioning) are on order and picking up some Meguiar’s today. Plenty left to do! I need to figure out how to get rid of this stuff too.

Steel wool or toilet bowl cleaner or your hull cleaner. But prob steel will is your best bet. Did you spray it on? Did it go after your lungs if you srayed it? I want to try something other than starbrite hull cleaner. It's nasty. I'm sure that's the same. I use it from strength.

I hesitated from using the On & Off on the Merc. I’m going to start w/ TB cleaner and see how it goes. I actually applied the On & Off to the hull with a 2” paint brush. I did about 1/4 of the side above the line in one pass and immediately rinsed off. A single pass and it’s as good as new.

No lung damage but gloves are a must and I covered the trailer with plastic to be safe.

I have used the starbrite.. Poor results and intoxicating fumes.

I'm hooked on Bio-Kleen. When the owners where at Havasu they demonstrated that there " oxidation remover " was more powerful than anyone's " hull" cleaner.

They offer a hull cleaner too but it was only recommended for dark brown- black staining. ( yep stronger yet)

Spray the oxidation remover on.. blows it off in seconds.

You have to wax it after or yellowing will reappear in a few outings..

Oxidation remover followed up by their sun polymer wax.. once a year.

No gloves.. no fumes.. no cover trailer.. easy deal

They're all just a version of some type of acid in different strengths. Muiratic usually.

The Works works if you leave it on for a bit. I use a squeegee and coat it. then I just watch it. could be 30 seconds could be 5 minutes but it all comes off.

This "Texas Red Mud" thing is very suspicious. I guess it is possible the boat came from East Texas where there is plenty of "Red Mud", or the Brazos where " the Brazos still runs muddy, like. she's run all along" which Robert Earl Keen confirmed by song in about 1976. However, studying the photos closely I believe the "mud" in question is actually "Red Dirt" from Oklahoma. Oklahoma is well known for this Red Dirt, and it can be found everywhere in the state with the exception of the area close to border with Arkansas.

One of two things occurred. You purchased your boat from one of those "North Texans"...say north of Dallas / Ft. Worth who was secretly dating a young lady from Oklahoma and would steal away every chance he got to see her, using the "big city" Cobalt as a lure. With running the highway all the time and the young lady being very willing (as Oklahoma girls have a reputation for being) he did not properly have time to clean his boat after every run.

The other option is that U-Ship stopped by one of the Oklahoma lakes on the way up. Say for instance Lake thunderbird by Norman. It's logical, he gets to visiting with the previous owner who drops a couple hints about Oklahoma ladies and the Cobalt. Next thing you know he's launching up on lake Thunderbird.

All I can say is that unless there were serious extenuating circumstances, no self respecting Texan would have those stains on his Cobalt.
