What I don't understand is who will sell you an ECU for a 430HP motor to install in your 380HP motor? Do Volvo Penta dealers really do this and undercut themselves from selling a more costly power package from the get-go? I wish someone would try this and let us all know, because as I look forward to an R3 model in a couple of years, I could save quite a bit if I buy a VP V8/300 and then just pay a few thousand and buy an ECU that ups HP to 350.
Volvo Penta parts.

Serial number from a true 430hp would be the first step.

Add to cart.. presto your on your way. I would want a verified part number though as there are 2 versions of the 6.2. I’m just looking at the EVC

Remember these Powertrain packages come complete to boat builders and are incorporated in the build.

Customer orders a R7 with a 430. They un box the package marked Volvo Penta and start rigging the boat.the engine and drive serial numbers are seperate and get listed with the HIN number and build sheet.

The franchise dealer who sells the boat can’t change that. Like a cars window sticker.

So, there isn’t a simple upload difference. There are hardware differences also?
Could someone with a 380 6.2L please post a picture of the block mounted emissions sticker?
If you open the hatch, it’s on the front of the block to the right under the head.
Thanks.
It will look like this.

As I sat with friends on our docked boat yesterday at a nice restaurant on the Erie Canal, a beautiful Cigarette “Top Gun” cruised by slowly, idling and sounding like the monster it is.. kind of a reality check...

And at the same time, saw that his 38’ boat didn’t have the ability to have friends sitting comfortably around a nice table enjoying the evening..
Spot on pal!

As much as I love big power ...I don’t miss having no hang out area. Geeze all that boat and your side saddle on bench seat??
That’s exactly why I went with ours.

Well I bought a R5 with a 380 Big Block. Love the boat got it out of Sandusky Ohio and shipped to my dealer in Charlotte. I feel like it is a well equipped boat. I only have a few hours on her. The weather here has been awful so have been unable to really enjoy the quality of this machine. Storm after storm, and this weekend we are off to the mtns with friends. But I have the answer to my question when I started this thread. The boat runs 52 mph with BB 380 Merc. I love the sound of the 502 when it fires up, and the amount of torque when I put it in gear is very surprising. It may be the B3 drive with the duo prop. This is my first B3. I had a Formula 271 Fastech with this same engine with the Bravo Drive and very different. The boat planes super quick with very little bow lift. Just a great boat and the fit and finish is fantastic. Very happy and thanks for the earlier commentary.

Hey congrats on your new baby...and thank you for the pics!!!

The glass cockpit display is just so cool. 8-)

Bravo three drive is an amazing hole-shot animal. Cuts your top speed a little bit but well worth it for its pulling power and planing time. Enjoy!👌🏻

Not to get totally off topic...but have we ever discussed what the differences between the Bravo 3 and B3X are? I know the B3 was rated up to 400hp, after that you are into B3X territory. They seem to share a lot of the same components, and the weight is only 3lbs different. Shaft size is the same since they use the same props. Maybe different gears?

I have the bravo 3 X drive and was told some of the gearing is beefed up to handle the higher horsepower such as the 525 EFI back in the day. However max HP shows 450. I’m curious which specific gears & bushings are stronger.

Yeah, the B3X is spec'ed by cobalt on anything /w the 8.2 in it. I had read the B3 was good to 400hp anything after that is the 3X but it looks like cobalt is putting the 3X on 380hp boats. Close enough I guess.

I read heavy duty U-Joints, "upgraded gears" and maybe a thicker gear housing? Just seems like a lot of upgraded metal for a minimum overall weight difference.
