Oily soot on lower unit
Oily soot on lower unit
Hey guys I have had my 282 for a little over a month and have been putting it to good use every weekend at the lake. Last week after putting it up on the lift I noticed an oily black soot at the top of the lower unit. It will wipe off a little just with a finger but I'm not sure if this is normal. This is the first Volvo I have been around so maybe the grey is just showing what's always been there but invisible on the black merc?? In just over 50 hours it has burned almost a quart of oil but I didn't think that was too alarming. Thoughts??

Never anything on my drive. My engine doesn't burn a drop in the 25 hours a year. Lol

I am not sure how old your 282 is or how it has been serviced but I have had two cobalts both with VP engines and never had an issue like that. You might want to have it serviced or contact the dealer if still under warranty.

I assume your talking about your transom??
If it’s the dipstick area possibly it’s expanding fluid and a leaking o ring and you should have it checked.
The transom is a different soot
Yes you can get soot from idles especially more with captians Call on. Plus when running 91 octane fuel ( slower burning. Save that for another day) it can be more increased.
I’ve had merc 496 Motorola ecu reprogrammed through whipple for that and it helped . But no set ups for Volvo to lean the idle setting that I’ve seen.
1 qt in 50 hours is great for the application as boat engines act as if there pulling a trailer so that is use not burning if you understand the difference.
Try some 87 octane and no CC for a trip and see how that improves.
Hey we’re still wanting water pics too mr 50 hrs in a month!! Nice summer

Ha ha! Just put up some pics in the August picture post! I don’t have cc but have been running premium so I’ll switch as the dock I fuel at has no ethanol regardless. I’m going to run it this weekend and try to have a mechanic look it over this next week. Pic for you cmattj!![Image]()

Re: Oily soot on lower unit
Our first VP was V-6, 190 hp.
The last day we were on the lake, late in the day, a larger newer boat with 8 people was stuck on water.
We pulled them in. I was hoping it didn't hurt our small boat.
The next season, I kept noticing black stuff on the white transom.
Never figured it out. Don't know if it was related to the tow. Maybe something not serviced right.
Traded boat in.
