Tuscany wrote: Fri Aug 31, 2018 9:31 am I would guess the entire exhaust side of the turbos would be wrapped. The other simpler option other than wrapping is a constant blower in the motorbox to cool the area. Combine the two, and I think the problem might be solved.

Small turbo engines seem to be Ford has been, and where GM is heading. Got to know what ever is in the future for the automakers is in the future for Merc/VP.
My Wife's 6.2l 420/460 was in the body shop last week repairing the rear bumper cover. Don't ask..🤣.
She had a turbo V6 Expedition as a loaner. Very impressive.
I agree smaller forced induction is the future, I have owned a WRX and now own an EcoBoost. SuperCharged seems like it may be easier for Boats. EGT's on my WRX hit 1200 - 1400 degrees. I think the EcoBoost is closer to 1000, but either way thats a lot of heat to vent out of the engine compartment especially when you start taking about two engines.

Matt or T5500000000 can chime in and tell me I have no idea what I am talking about
Agreed, but I got to think wrapping them would be enough. Tight aluminum insulated wrap is pretty secure. All of the heat then exits the pipe, or in your case, the CC! :D
Good call - hearing a couple turbo's spool up with the CC open would be awesome.

I wish. I couldn't hear anything from the Expedition, and my last compound turbo Ford 6.4L was totally whistle free, even after being tuned/deleted and a turbo back exhaust... It seems that they have engineered the whistle out of them. :(
My first 99' 7.3L whistled like a bird, then I guess after "complaints", they changed the profile of the turbo wheel fins to eliminate the sound.

Twins, my friend. If I ever buy another boat, it will have twin engines.. There is only so much fun drawn from a single engine, and it ain't much...
If they came out with an R7 with twin V-6 turbo engines, I'm in like Flynn. Like today.

Buy something new from Ford it comes /w fake engine nose piped into the cabin via the stereo. Is a sad world we live in. I bought an ODBII to USB cable and downloaded some software to disable it on my F150 out of principle.

Not to mention that there is a huge pile of water just sitting there waiting to be used as a heat sink.

Turbos are the future.

Yeah plenty of water to cool the engine, but really I was referring to the amount of heat thrown off the exhaust which would need to run back into the confined engine compartment to spin the turbo. Course honda figured it out /w a turbo I4 in their jet skis so maybe I just need to shut up.

Forced Induction is awesome but unless you can come up /w something I am missing a supercharger seems easier in this case? Yeah you lose a little bit of power from the engine needing to spin the supercharger but it also seems much simpler than running exhuast and charge pipes through the interior of a boat.

I agree, unless I'm missing something, supercharger seems like a better fit.

Gotta make that EcoBoost sound like a V8 - because 'Meria.

BMW - the ultimate driving machine - does it on several of their new cars as well. That shocked me more than Ford.

Superchargers are highly inefficient. They make instant boost off of idle, but the advantage ends right there. They draw a lot of horsepower and extra fuel to run, especially at high RPM. The higher the RPM, the more power it takes to spin them. Turbos take virtually no horsepower to run, and that's why they are powering the high efficient engines of today. Downside is lag, but even that has improved from better turbo wheel design. Add in direct injection, better flowing heads and exhaust, and boost can be made almost instantly.

Yup. And the reason you see so many twin-turbo designs these days is because you can make the spinning assembly for each turbo smaller, which means less mass, which means less lag and higher efficiency.

not to mention that superchargers lose their efficiency even more as RPM's climb. With a motor running a constant RPM like what most boats do turbo lag is not even an issue. So like what T has said and others. Superchargers are almost a thing of the past and turbo is the way to go.

And like I have said before. Mercury is already doing this with their high horsepower I/O motors. It is only a matter of time before you start seeing some of these technologies in a smaller more reliable scale

FYI

You can order an A25 with a mercury blue racing motor if you like. Friend has an A25 with a 520 big block in it. Sweet boat may go on sale soon.
