Cobalt 282 Single 496 ho

Good Morning fellow boaters! This is my 1st visit and post to this site and I am looking for some good information. I have recently sold a Baja 252 and looking to upgrade to my 1st Cobalt. I am looking at a 262 and also a 282. Both have a 496 HO. I have pretty much info on the 262. I haven't been able to find as much info as I would like on the 282. Main questions I have concerning the 282 first off is the single 496 HO sufficient on this boat? How is it coming out of the hole and getting on plane? Secondly, Boat test shows their test of this boat with the same engine had a max speed of 50 mph with this setup. If u have this boat and setup, what top end speeds are u seeing? Lastly, I know the 282 has a 9ft beam, what if any issues have u experienced towing and what are u towing it with? Is it difficult or expensive to obtain the oversized permit to tow? Most of my boating will be on Lake Cumberland in Ky, with maybe an annual trip to Cincinnati,Oh. Most of that trip is interstate 75. Other than that, my unit is within 5 miles to the the launching ramp every weekend. Thank you for taking the time to read this and hopefully I can get some great info off here to help in my decision. You're looking at about 6 seconds to get on plane in the 282 with that engine, and about 2.5 mpg at around 3000 rpm.

Towing will be a bit of a challenge - it's 7000 pounds by the time you put a few things in it, and getting an oversize permit varies state by state. Ohio requires a surety bond of $10k, which will cost you a few hundred dollars, and a document faxed from your insurance company directly to the state, among other things. I'm not recommending it, but many people skip the permit and hope they don't get noticed (you are within 6").

I know a guy with a 262 with a 8.2 in it and Loves it. I think the 282 and a 496 is a good set up. Twins to me would be nicer. Shoot me a pm I know someone that has a 282 for sale and he can tell you first hand what it's like. Good luck on your search.

9 ft beam is a PIA if you travel EVER. You can skip the permits but that's the kind of thing I'd worry about constantly.

If it's got a home it's a non-issue.
