New 2019 JL Audio

Totally stole this from another forum, but JL has some new big announcements for 2019. They will be releasing a new line of speakers - the M6 will replace the current M series with a M3 speaker to come later this year to replace the MX line.

Additionally, and perhaps bigger news, they will be releasing a new line of marine amps that can be tuned and configured via an Android or iPad tablet over a Bluetooth connection. They have been doing this on their car amps for awhile, cool to see the tech move into the marine line. Here are some pics.

I'm a stereo dork, perhaps not to the level of John or MNLakeBum, but I like nice things. That said, a boat is like the crappiest acoustic environment ever. Cars are bad, but open air boats in the middle of the water just suck. I want my stuff to sound nice, but I don't think I am at a point of needing to digitally tune the amps in my boat. Perhaps I am just missing out I dunno? The IT dork in me would want to mess /w it, but I have a feeling the price tag will stop me.

I don't see them dropping the M amp line, they will just sell the MV line as a premium product. I haven't seen actual specs on the M series speaker replacement, I could be upset I missed out on that, but we got good deals on our stuff so I will hold onto it. Plus I don't think James at creative wants to see my name pop up in his email anytime soon.

Speakers aren't really advancing at the same pace as a lot of other electronics - there are a lot of 20+ year old speakers that sound as good as most things made today, so I wouldn't fret that there's something new out. I've seen a few reports suggesting that the JL Audio M6 and M3 have the same technology as the old M and MX series but are simply dressed up and re-branded to look more up-to-date (and maybe play some catch-up with LED lighting).

Still, fun to see something new from one of the leaders in the industry. My boat would look good with some M6s on board, but I should probably find full time employment before making such plans :/

Read the same and agree on the speakers. If that is the case I am glad we bought when we did - kept me from having to run power wire for the speaker LED's

The new amps would be fun to play with but I doubt I would pay to do it.

That being said I totally agree, boats are crappy environments for listening and unless it’s an enclosed cabin in a cruiser, boat speakers are mounted in way less than ideal locations. Not one of the speakers in my R5 is in a good location(it’s simply not practical or possible to put speakers in and ideal location in a boat). If you want to EQ the sound and are listening through a smart phone, there are already some built in EQ functions on the phone and dozens of EQ apps that can be had for free or $.99. The problem with equalizing the sound is what’s good for one sitting location in a boat is likely not good for another. Again, boat simply suck a listening space.

The other really ironic thing is the majority of people listening to music on their expensive boat stereo system are streaming from something like Spotify or XM which are both super compressed audio formats. "Normal" spotify streaming on mobile devices is 96kbps, which is a crazy low bitrate. Their high quality option is 320kbps which is better but you are still losing sound quality. To make matters worse we are all connecting the audio source the stereo via bluetooth which further reduces the audio quality of the already compressed mp3's.

We are using spotify, I am working on talking Mrs. Nauti into finding room in the family budget to move to Tidal, it's more expensive but they stream full quality CD Quality in FLAC. We have an unlimited data plan on our cell phones - lets use it!

You hit the nail on the head, jeff & mnlb. Between the poor audio environment and source material default, it's why I'm not into the audiophile boating scene. Don't get me wrong, music is ALWAYS playing on our boat. Like the majority of boaters, we just desire simple connecting, clear sounding, good bass pounding, and at times loud audio playing during our water sport activities.

Our home system is where the audiophile budget gets the nod....reproducing audio as if the artist is performing right there in front of you...comparing vinyl to digital....lossless audio....tweaking the sound, etc.

I occasionally stream via iHeartRadio but you can definitely tell the music is compressed. It’s tough for me to carry a large library of songs around on a smart phone uncompressed. 1,600 songs of uncompressed music would take up about 128 GB, half of the space on my iPhone X. My iTunes library has about 14,000 songs. Fortunately, on a boat with all the noise and crappy speaker locations, I’m sure I can’t tell the difference between a song recorded at a 256 kbs and one that is uncompressed.

Those bad boys on each end are Carvers. I was listening to a jazz track and could literally hear the keys clacking on the saxophone. UNfreakinbelievable!

Love it! I was into stereo gear as a teenager and then really got into it and made a career out of selling audio & video gear for a decade after college. I worked at Best Buy back in the late '80's early 90's when they still carried audiophile stuff and after that for a company called Audio King.
