Trailer tires
Yes, I know, they all suck and it's a terrible, dead-horse topic. My tires are going to be 2 years old and were no-name tires from the factory (Towmax str2). They've been ok, but given that they sit in freezing temps for 7 months without moving and then sit outside for 5 months and knowing I often tow 100 miles at a time, I get nervous about them. I'm probably going to replace them this spring, but after looking, no clue what to go with.
I read good things about the new Goodyear tires, but I've never had a pair of GY car tires that I didn't hate. Most of the other brands are hit or miss on reported quality.
Do you thing there is really a difference or is one ST tire as good as another? Is radial important vs bias?
I'm considering
Carlisle Radial Trail HD
Goodyear Endurance
Maxxis 8008 (the only bias in the group)
I know old topic, but what would you do, or am I nuts for thinking of replacing this early?

Re: Trailer tires
People buy a lot of those exact Carlisles around here (MN), but maybe after 8-10 years. If you’re nervous about it, maybe invest in a spare for your trailer instead?

Re: Trailer tires
Without a ST tire she will bounce like crazy. ( I tryed it once in my younger days)
The new ST Goodyear has a nicer rating but like any trailer tire that’s been twisted up like a pretzel several times, they get tired and delaminate quick whether they are covered or not.
5 years and there only good for a tire swing . I have friends that run 10 ply LT tires on thier triple axel trailers and swear by them so you have options. NO passenger tires period regardless of load rating as I said they rebound and hate get twisted.

Re: Trailer tires
I run 10 ply on my travel trailer (9k loaded) and it rides awesome. I'll be doing the same on the boat trailer when the time comes, but the dealer put new tires on it when I bought it. Ashamed to say I have no idea what they put on, but it tows nice, lol.

Re: Trailer tires
I also run LT tires on my race trailer. I will likely do the same on the boat trailer when they need replacing.

Haha BB.
I hate trailer tires..
You know, Trailer companies try to gain every extra cent of profit from a build. One way is to spec their tires to their weight rating totally used up, with no wiggle room left for extra weight. You can find travel trailers with blow outs all over the nations interstates on any given summer day.
If you buy tires that far exceed the weight carried, the less heat they will build when towing, and the more success you will have.
Personally, I change every 5 years, and my boat trailer runs 16” 10 PR tires with about 4K of weight carrying ability in the bank. I may try LT tires next time. These LT tires from Sailun are actually top rated. They are branded as ST, but are identical to their LT spec. The GY Endurance are also top notch. .

I put car tires on my trailer. P235/75R15. Never been happier. I hate trailer tires with a passion.
DOT regs allow for car tires on a trailer as long as you derate their load capacity by 10%

Re: Trailer tires
Already done.
Seriously though, I've never understood why trailer tires are superior for trailers, when they are not acceptable for cars or trucks. But the reverse is fine. Doesn't make sense. I don't care what a tire store tells anyone, they make more money from ST tires so they have motivation to sell them. 49CFR571.110 confirms that DOT and NHTSA are ok with car tires on trailers as long as you derate them by 10%. I'd ask that anyone who questions this look at how many failures they've had vs miles driven on STs vs P or LT tires. I'm fairly certain that the failure rate of trailer tires exceeds that of car or truck tires by 100x or more.
I'll go to my grave claiming that STs are junk and are not manufactured to the same standard that a car or truck tire is. I don't care what brand or model.
