New Owner with Questions

Post by Airclnr »

The wife and I finally achieved our dream and just bought a, new to us, 2008 Cobalt 302. What series is this boat? (S, R, etc.) Also, is it possible to re-dye the bow and cockpit covers? They are red and show slight fading.

Thanks for the input.

Welcome aboard! Let’s see some pictures of your 302.

So with your boat being a 2008 it is actually none of the above. Cobalt started the letter series with the A series in 2011. Then the R series came in 2014.

Before that the model was just after the LOA of the boat. And even numbers show it is an open bow. Hence 302. And odd numbers are cuddy cruisers. So 263, 293, 303, 323.

I wouldn't want to redye the covers as that dye could bleed all over your new to you boat. Welcome and pictures or it didn't happen.

Dyeing a syntetic fabric like most mooring covers is tricky because the dye will also dye most things other than stainless steel. So, you need a big enough stainless tub to heat the dye solution and dye the fabric, and then a way of disposing of it that doesn't leave you with a kitchen full of newly-red items. Not too hard for little things, but tricky to do big stuff at home.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll just end up purchasing new covers eventually.

Welcome from Oklahoma! No freaking way I would dye mooring covers. I guarantee that stuff will bleed through and get all over your upholstery. Even now, if my snap-on's are going to be out in the weather without the mooring cover on top, I put towels over the sun deck to prevent any bleeding through if the covers get wet.

Chunk'm and buy new ones.

Welcome from California!
Not knowing your boating history, you did great on your first Cobalt.!!
Your gonna enjoy that 302! As she looks ungodly large on the trailer she will shrink once in the water. They also get shorter every time you take her out!
Pics of that Red Beauty??

Oh covers risk rub color to interior anyway so stay away from dye like the others mentioned. Sunbrella dies after 10 years.
