Correct the dealer has them we don't. They just don't publish much sometimes. Darn them!! Hint torque ratings 430!!!
Which ones do you want? I’ll ask my dealer. I’m not calling him twice a week anymore to discuss options, because I’m all set so I think he is a bit lonely.
It's not a big deal to me so don't bother him. Thanks though. I was just curious what they are putting on the 380 and 430 and exactly what rpm they are hitting. They may even run diff gear ratios.
R7 Volvo Penta

350 FH6 DP 51 mph @ 5,750
380 FH5 DP 51 @ 6,050
430 FH6 DP 56 @ 5,750

It looks to me like the OP is right on the performance line. Maybe he can try a set of FH6s to lower his RPM at the same speed?, but who knows if he will be able to hit that speed with a higher pitch prop.

This sounds about right to me. My 380 R7 will hit 51 with 2 people and low fuel. Or 51 with 8 people and a full tank. So I believe I could get a couple more mph with a different prop set. But I don’t want to lose any low end. I love how fast it planes and I can get to 50mph in a hurry. I will be the one driving it 98% of the time so I’m not worried about over revving the motor

I get confused will all of this prop talk. It seems to me that with the engine turning the same rpm (5,750) with the 350 or 380, wouldn't the two boats go the same speed assuming the engine is powerful enough to push the boat through the water at 5,750 rpm? Why does the 430 with FH6 go faster than the 350 with FH6, both at the same RPM?

Forget it, I just figured it out. :)

The 430 has a taller gear ration (2.14 vs 2.32) which explains the higher speed. The 430 does take 3.7 seconds to get on plane though vs the 380 with the lower gearing @ 3.2 seconds.

Interesting that the time to plane with the 350 is 4 seconds so with the weight of the R7 a 380 is a better choice. With the R3, the 350 beats all of the other engines getting up on plane - empty boat though (OK, a driver).

In the R7, even without the engine torque figures, you can see the 380 is engine if you value holeshot over top speed. If you want top speed, the 430 is the choice (in R3, R5, R7).

Maybe no one can really notice a difference of .5 second to plane though. :)

I'm so glad you added your last second. Yes gear ratio makes a huge diff.
So you have 250 rpms left in the 430 max rpm to get to 6000. Now switch pitch to a fh5 and bam you now have a quicker hole shot then a 380. Again it's what they want you to see. They want you to see speed with the 430. I bet you get the same sites with the extra rpm and a better hole shot. I'm buying his spare fh5s for my 430.
Tuscany where are you man? What's on yours? I think that will answer some issues with his as he bounces off the rev limiter.

But you lose the top speed. I guess a 4 second to plane is extremely fast for 27’ boat and the top speed is excellent as well.

Bob let me add one aspect that applies to Boats and cars when it come to gear ratio.

You need power/torque to pull what you refere to as a tall gear ratio.
Gear ratio is a multiple on 1 full rotation in and in example 2.14 out, in 1 complete rotation.
So why not a 1.5 ratio and a F3 prop? Well designers know there is more leverage with a 2.13 gear to move a F5 prop as becomes a better for forward propulsion due to its increased pitch.

A car with a 3:08 rear end gear and a 26 inch tire is equal to a 3:73 gear and a 28inch diameter tire. Both travel the same rpm and mph on the freeway, but the effective acceleration is better in leverage to the wheels with the 3:73 gear . ( with all external moving parts weighing the same amount).

It’s the pulley effect on a engine chain hoist that we pull down a foot but the hook only rises an inch. But it’s capable of lifting a 1,000 pounds.

So in closing bob. It’s all engineering in basic physics that these props and ratios match rpm range and torque to provide maximum leverage and thus acceleration.

One more reason the 430 has the ability to push through for increased propulsion.

I still want a merc 430 8.2 with CC to show up in Bobs R3. Lemon drop anybody?😎

FH5.
Way too much RPM. Wrong prop IMO. Yeah, it jumps on plane in a snap and has an incredible responsive throttle , but the high RPM at low speed drives me crazy. $1,400 for the fh6 isn’t worth it to me, but I’m going to keep my eyes open on eBay.
Love the engine, the technology, the fuel economy, the low weight, the push button winterizing. If I could trade it for a 430 Merc, I would probably do it.. I hate the high RPM, and it’s as loud as all get out, and I’m not sure why, unless aluminum passes noise more than cast iron. The motorbox is insulated to the max, but still doesn’t muffle it nearly enough.

So the factory still used the 380 drive and prop on yours. Interesting. Is the great ratio the same on the 380 and 430? Yes T spend the bucks and go up to the fh6 then. I'll watch for one. I'm sure they're are hundreds out there. Lol

Good nights sleep, and coffee in hand..it’s only 9 o’clock and only two disasters so far...looks like it’s going to be a good day.🤣. But I would love to lower the rpms a bit.

I would like to try a set of FH6 if anyone out there has a set for sale.

Really? With the CC closed on mine you can't even tell it's running, unless I'm WOT, which I never do with the CC closed. When I switch it off Mrs. akor always thinks the boat died.

I'm not a fan of high RPM marine engine either, buddy has a SeaDoo with the supercharged twins and that thing is LOUD even at cruise speeds. Benefits of a big block, lots of torque at low RPM.

the 454 must be a quiet motor. Because at first mine was so loud I thought I had a leak in my exhaust or a bad flap on my CC exhaust. So I had it looked at and everything tested out.

Then I rode in White Lightning's 502 mag 252 and his was about as loud as mine. Then of course even louder when you opened the captains call.

Cruising speed on my 262 I was turning about 3k-3300 rpms. Cruising speed in my R7 I am at 4000-4500rpms. So really only an extra grand. I think the boat is rather quiet. In fact at idle speeds you really cannot tell the motor is running at all. So I would find it hard to compare to a Sea Doo that is turning 6,000 rpms at cruising speeds and 8,000wot.

At idle it is very quiet, at cruise the water off the hull is louder than the engine.
