Boat vs. jet ski - what are the pros and cons?
Re: Boat vs. jet ski - what are the pros and cons?
I’m still wondering if bobrae and his girlfriend when he was 20 years old continued on happily. I thought that was the best part of this thread.
Anyway we have both. We will Jet ski on a hot day to splash around for an hour and jump some cruiser wakes. After that I prefer my day outings on our Cobalt. ( Stereo, sammitches, lemonades, swim platform) go the distance for us.

Re: Boat vs. jet ski - what are the pros and cons?
Ya know I dont have anything against "water roaches" directly, but it's some of the riders that cause me heartburn.
It's like my motorcycles... I ride responsibly, and it peeves me when some asshat is making the rest of us look bad. And I think PWCs are the same.
Every summer I have two or three I have to chase off my wake. Its against the law but they chase anyway. And hey, I get it, they want to get some air,, but if I have to stop or change course quickly and they nearly crash into my boat, then yeah, I have an issue. Its created an animosity in my mind much in the way 4-wheelers and UTVs have. I also own those, but boy there are some idiots that ride them and constantly threaten my riding areas.
So A7, whatever you and John decide, I'm with Liquid, I trust y'alls judgement.

Thx YT.
Honestly, there’s really not much going on behind the scenes here. I reached out to Andrew via PM after his initial posts. Nice guy who also has a passion to be on the water like the rest of us. In the interest of transparency for the members, the PM is posted below.....
Hey Andrew.
Thanks for the PM my friend.
The other moderator and I discussed your post. This is mainly a forum for folks who have an interest in Cobalt boats ( or questions about them).
Your post provided some value in the article comparing jet skis to boats and thus we felt it did not need a heavy handed deletion.
However, you are most likely the only member of your kind on this forum (PWC agenda driven may be a good characterization?). While we appreciate a healthy debate on the advantages and disadvantages of jet ski vs boat ownership, it may be a little out of the realm of day to day Cobalt boat discussion.
We would love to have your topics stay Cobalt related instead of PWC driven. Otherwise a general boating forum may be more appropriate.
I hope you’ll stay and continue posting with this in mind. We all have a passion for being on the water in many forms....which includes personal watercraft. We just happen to be a bunch of sick Cobalt boat freaks here who enjoy each other’s fellowship, learn from each other’s Cobalt operating wisdom, and drool over each other’s Cobalt boat pictures....especially in the winter months for us northerners.
Cheers my PWC friend.

Hi AsLan7,
Thank you for the clarification, I understand and will keep in mind all these things above.
Thank you again and keep in touch.

Hope this helps in the clarification of this thread for the members.

Thanks A7. As I said before, I trust your judgment and really don't have anything against PWCs. I agree with you too, this isn't really the place to debate a PWC or a boat. It's a Cobalt forum!

Agree 1000000000% . I've owned a few of these in my day and loved jumping cruiser wake or what not. But not 50ft behind their boat. A safe distance.Ytmsn wrote: Thu May 09, 2019 8:04 am Ya know I dont have anything against "water roaches" directly, but it's some of the riders that cause me heartburn.

Last year I had an idiot kid bang into the swim platform of my 262 because he was gassing it and not looking, he was to interested in seeing if his buddy was still riding some cruiser wake. When I honked my horn repeatedly and started yelling at the kid. He looked on and did what any inexperienced driver would do and let off the gas. Well what happens when you throttle off a jet ski? you cannot turn it. So he went plowing into the back of my boat at about 5mph. Hurt his pride more than my boat. Not even a scratch. I tried to get him to follow me into the docks so I could have a chat with him. But he drove off as fast as he could.
So needless to say that left a bad taste in my mouth in regards to jetski's. But what really annoys me is pontooners lol . They are always driven by elderly people it seems like and they feel they own the lake. Always going in the opposite flow of the channel and get out of the way of no one. I easily get cut off by 2-3 of them every time I am on the water.

In all seriousness they are traveling at a mean 11.6mph. I think they can steer left or right to dodge a boat or 2.

Re: Boat vs. jet ski - what are the pros and cons?
I've read the thread a few times and I'm kind of mixed. On one had, a PWC is a boat and we do have a general boating forum, so maybe there's a place for it. On the other had, this entire forum is dedicated to Cobalt boats. I wonder how the PWC community would feel if we began to use their forum bandwidth to promote Cobalt agendas?
I guess at the the end of the day, I look at it like this (with no disrespect intended). In today's world of on-line information, there are so many specialized forums out there that nearly anyone can find the specific information that they want or need based on search topic. I don't know what is gained by using this product specific forum other than to further someone's case for promoting their own agenda. I have owned and ridden jetski's and imho, they have little in common with bowrider usage. I wonder if the poster has ever been on a Cobalt? In reading the article from the link in the original thread, it's seems clear to me that the author does not have a good grasp of the audience here and is merely fishing. I do think A7's response was logical and professional, but still not sure this is the proper place for the PWC vs Boat discussion or PWC on boat discussion, especially when the majority of our boats would not be able applicable for the article (putting a 12-16ft PWC on a 24ft boat?). Now had the article been directed at proper interaction during usage with Cobalt style boats to promote safety or other similar interactive tips, then we have a conversation starter.
Maybe it's a grumpy Friday, but that's where I'm at.

Re: Boat vs. jet ski - what are the pros and cons?
Aslan7 explained it better than I likely would have. We need to balance being heavy-handed against letting the board be overrun with spam. Some things like ads for viagra or online dating are easy to delete, while discussions of water sport-related activity not directly Cobalt-related are a tougher call and may interest some members.
I think one respectful thread that's outside our normal scope of discussion was worth looking at and thinking about, but not yet worth deleting posts as it's not too hard to avoid one thread that may not interest you. If it becomes more of a problem, we can merge threads, shut it down, or explore other options.

Re: Boat vs. jet ski - what are the pros and cons?
We don’t see much of that from the pontoon boaters on our lake other than the rental pontoons. I did see a ton of it while living in California for 20 years, the idiot factor there was 10x what it is in Minnesota but we tend to grow up around boats here. Here half the boats on the lake are pontoon or fishing boats and you get a lot of younger families with higher end pontoons. Our Marker One has a 350 Verado and there are several pontoons on the lake with twin 250s or 300s. The biggest offenders here are usually the younger crowd in daddy’s wake board/surf boat with rap music playing at full volume from the tower speakers. I haven’t so far even let my 19 and 21 year olds out in the R5 Surf without me. They know proper etiquette but I love being at the helm so they are stuck with me for the foreseeable future!tgrace98 wrote: Thu May 09, 2019 10:52 amAgree 1000000000% .
