Stereo chirping/interference and wiring

The last few times on our boat, there is a VERY annoying high pitch chirping sound from the speakers when the stereo is on (with or without music) and when the engine is running. It’s not a whine that changes with rpms. I’m assuming it’s either the amp or a grounding problem. Since the problem is newly manifested, I’m leaning toward an amp problem.

I planned on replacing the headunit, speakers and amp anyway so might as well get started. I have a pretty good understanding of stereo installs, but how accessible are the wiring runs? The amp is in the bow storage compartment and looks very accessible... but not sure about the rear speakers in the main cabin and the two remote heads.

Is everything fairly accessible? And other ideas on the chirping? Would hate to have the same issue once the new system is installed...

Also, what are people recommending for 6 channel amps? Finally, is there a recommended sub location on the 242?

Chirp can come from a lot of places, most typically a ground loop or a ground distribution setup not in a star configuration (i.e., the same ground run is carrying power return from multiple devices), but component failures do happen too. Starting a new install is a great way to make sure the wiring's all done right, and isn't the problem.

Does anyone know if the Sony remote heads can be used if I upgrade to a newer Sony headunit? I'm only replacing the headunit to get Bluetooth and would like to leave the remote heads in place if possible.

Usually yes, but specific model numbers of the old and new head unit are needed to me sure - they did change them a bit some years ago. You can also add a bluetooth receiver to the aux input of most existing head units, which may be a cheaper option.

Checked with Crutchfield today and they claimed that the remote heads would work with a new Sony head unit so I’m going that direction.
