Gas Burps!

Post by Atl Cobalt »

I know, sounds like and old man problem, butI promise, it's the boat not me! I have to be very carful when I fill up the boat (2004 226) to make sure that the gas doesn't "burp" a couple of cups of gasoline back out the fill port. If I put my ear next to the fill port, I can hear it begin to gurgle when it is getting close to full, then I can stop filling and wait till it stops then add another 2 or 3 gallons or more. I would think that the vent near the cockpit on the starboard side would allow it to vent so that it doesn't do that.

Anyone else have this issue? If so how did you cure it?

I'm glad it's not something broken on the one hand, but almost wish that it was a simple issue that could be fixed. I guess it's a design flaw. My old boat would spit out of the vent tube, but not the fill port. I added the VesselView app this year and try to make sure I know how much gas I've used so I can try to keep from splashing gas everywhere when I fill up.

Once I hear it gurgle I stop filling. I always thought the gurgle meant the level of gas was exceeding the height were the vent line attacks to the fuel tank and that's why you get fuel backing out the fill port.
