Anyone waiting for one of the 4, 6 or 8's?

As posted elsewhere, I am in the market for a boat for my place at Tahoe. So an R7 is the natural choice (for me). But spending $1xx,xxx on a boat that would be delivered in May/June 2020 that will be replaced by the R8 in August/Sept 2020 is something to think about. Is anyone else in the same spot...waiting for the even number models so late in the 3,5,7 lifespan?

You will probably be looking at 2021 before you are buying an R7 replacement. I’d you look at last history Cobalt releases 1 model then the rest follow the next year. Hence why you can find a 2013 R5 but the R7 didn’t go into production until 2014

This is what Cobalt wrote to me in March of 2019:

"The R3, R5, R7 all will continue for 2020 and probably into 2021 model year.
Yes we are working on new models, the R6 will be the first one introduced in October. Followed by the R8 with a few built as 2020 models. The R4 will not come until spring of 2020 calendar year with only a few built, full introduction as 2021 models."

The new model year boats usually appear in August (dealer websites started showing inventory of 2020 R model boats in early August this year) and with the above advice, you might see the R8 in light production by spring.

I think you are in a good position. You have plenty of time to order an R7 for delivery in late spring, so why not wait until the R8 is announced, see what it has to offer in terms on hull design, interior layout, amenities and price and make a decision then? If you like the R8, you can order one. If you don't, you can pick up a dealer stock R7, probably at a discount. That's what I would do.

I would rather own something fresh, in style and brand new, rather than something being phased out.

I think the OP is in a good spot. If he likes what the new R8 looks like, he may be able to order one for summer. If he can't get R8 for summer then the outgoing R7 will still be available.

First off congrats on the purchase of what I am sure is your dream lake home on Tahoe.

2nd it ultimately is not fun thinking about the best way to spend 100k+ on a toy and thinking am I making the wrong decision. I first caught wind of the model change earlier in the year while I was purchasing my R7. As you can see by my email sig I went with the new R7. I bought a dealer stocked one and it had everything I had to had and the exact color scheme I wanted. I first looked for slightly used. But I wanted the glass dash and the new gen5 VP motor which landed me on an 18+. So the great thing about Cobalt is they hold their value as good if not better than anything on the water. Bad thing for buyers buying a slightly used one because the savings is a wash.

As someone that works in the tech industry I never buy the first run of anything. So to me the earliest R8 I would order would be year 2 which I would assume at this point is a 2022. So if the R8 comes out and it is something we have to have. I can trade up. But to be honest I absolutely love my R7 and doubt I would make the move.

So I think rigging and wiring won't change much or what ever changes there are will be easy to adapt into the harness. So to me the change might be easy to do. The new models like A29 that might be a completely new boat all together. We will see. I think we are all jumping to conclusions yet. I would buy a new r7 and love it. After being on tgraces you can't go wrong. I think all your going to gain is a new name and a larger price increase. In I'm done and you all can shame me now I can handle it and they all will come stock with a 240 or twin 240s. On im happy now.

What makes you think the hull will be the same?

Because lots of manufactures do that. Saves costs and time. If the hull isn't broke why fix it. Where are they going to store all of those hulls if they are making r7 and r8 all at the same time, um they don't they are the same. The top Half diff story may be new. And maybe not?

You might recall, last spring the Cobalt Facebook page had a short lived post about seeing new moulds for the R6. The post was taken down quickly.

I wasn’t told by Cobalt that the hulls were or were not new. I was told that “all new” boats would arrive starting this spring. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what “all new” means.

As to why fix it if it isn’t broke? That’s how things improve over the years. The changes aren’t always successful - but without design changes, nothing advances and manufacturers are overtaken by others.

Yea that was a upper and lower hull already put together. Im sure it was coming back from Cobalts lake xyz. The 222 became the 232 and other series became other series. Yes they do it too.
It just wouldn't surprise me. There moulds are old but how many of them are newer? We don't know. We may never know but it wouldn't supprise me. Like I said pretty much every manufacture keeps the hull and builds on top of it. Then eventually they change the hull. Who knows? The 220 of old to the 220 of mine to the 220 of now are all diff. But other models share. R series isn't that old so it wouldn't surprise me if it's not the same. We saw a r picture and we can't talk about it but it doesn't look anything like what we have now but I also don't think that's what they are bringing out either. And it didn't say r8 or r6 or r4 either on it.

Well I think we can agree that new boats are coming and given the timing of the OPs purchase it’s not a bad idea to wait and see what the new boat is about before purchasing.
