282 496 B3 daily flush out procedure

Post by Indy1K »

Hi gang,

This might seem like a stupid question, but is there a procedure to follow for the daily salt water flush out when I get home to the lift?
Normally, the boat is at the Marina in the High and dry rack and they flush the engines when we get back. I previously had VP Aquamatic 290s in my 86 cruiser. I added fresh water flush outs to my raw water intakes so I could flush out the engines each time.

Now, with the new boat and the Mercruiser 490s and Bravo 3s, I want to do the same. The engines are closed cooling and have the fresh water flushout hoses and fittings installed, but want to know the proper procedure. Do I run the water before making the connection?
I also do not want to get water into the exhaust manifolds, not good.

Help!

Thanks a bunch, still a newbie on this boat.
Spending this weekend getting familiar with the boat

Thanks,

Kevin

Flush kits are usually “ T fitting “ so when connected the sea water pump sees the water but it bleeds out the other side ( outdrive pick up ).
Once you start her the water gets picked up and pushed throughout the freshwater side. ( exchanger/ exhaust)
Once your done you can also choose to use your air pump to push the relief valve on the sea water pump and clear it into the bilge. ( only needed if you worry about freezing temps.
Remember to rinse your outdrives off as the corrosion from salt isn’t friendly to alot of pivot joints.
Get a “ simple chuck “ spot free rinse system so you “don’t “ water spot everything. I wash everything with it. Your black bravos will thank you!

Cmattj, thanks for the response. Yes, I have the fresh water flush-outs. I was interested in the procedure. One fella said you have to turn the water flow on first to get the hose to connect to the fitting on the engine?
Then, once there is water pressure there, start the engine immediately to prevent water from getting into the manifolds?
After flush, stop engine and shut off water immediately?
Yes?
On my old Volvo Pentas, the running water would go back out the pickups on the drives.
Same here yes?

Thanks

Yes... a true split fitting will bleed out the water pick ups in the drive.
Mercury freshwater pumps are $$ and running the impellers dry for more that 10 seconds creates groves in the pumps.

ImageWell, here are pictures of the ports on my 496s. Does anyone know if there is a special hose adapter that goes on the hose and plugs into this fitting to provide fresh water for flush out?

Thanks

I think the other coupler picture is the other end of this you need.

Those bottom pics match What I have on the engines. I think the first pic is the part that goes on the gardenhose, Yes? That should do it!
Thanks,
