The crackling noise ONLY happens when it starts to overheat at 200 accompanied by steam (I hope). I cant find anything online which thermostat to get. 140 vs 160. Also, are the fins from the impeller gonna "go away" over time or do I need to hunt them down?
Ok it will say on your star what it is. Volvo had a bulletin to replace the 140 to the 160. Mine still had the 140 in it. There is a reason why they wanted to buy that's not a big deal here. It's only so the oil gets warmer. So it won't turn to sludge as easy. Ok let's not be taking pieces of impeller. It's this what you have going on. Let's see pictures of the impeller. 1st this is a new to you boat right. Did you get a copy of maint from the prev owner? When I sell a boat I always tell the new owner to always replace the impeller before going out. Because when they fail its never good and rather fix something before it goes bad. You need to start your maint as then you know what was done going forward. Then after this let us know what other maint was done. Or else let's get on that before we go any further this year.

Those pieces are in your power str cooler. By your tstat, exhaust manifolds, fuel cooler. I'm think of more spots. But you have to find them. Some guys back flush to help get them. On a Volvo this is such a easy thing to change is not a bad thing to do every year.
If you Google impeller pieces you will find all sorts of help.
Also some 8.1 have 2 tstats
