Measuring shift cable on 202 Condurre

Good morning everyone,

I took my boat out for its " new to me " maiden voyage over the weekend. She ran well enough where I'm happy except for reverse. The previous owner said that the shift cable was giving him problems where it would need to be replaced. He said I could lube it and hope for the best which got him by over the past few seasons. However, after clunking it into reverse at 2,000 rpms due to a shift delay, i feel its both a detriment to the outdrive and a safety issue.

So, I'm looking for some advice. When ordering a new 33c, do I need to pull the old cable and measure it ferrule to ferrule or can I use the following method in a generic "Determining Length of Remote Control Cable" guide that came with my paperwork? In there, it says,

ADD A+B where B is the distance from the remote control location, along the gunwale, to the transom and A is the distance from the gunwale to the outboard centerline.

ADD 18" to that.

DIVIDE by 12"

This is the length of the throttle and shift cables in feet.

Finally, there seems to be nothing wrong with the throttle cable. Should I replace that too while I'm in there?

Any other advice for what looks like a relatively simple fix?

Did you look at the cables? They should have the length printed on the casing.
