R7 upgraded stereo opinions

Post by Dadof3girls »

So I am closing on my new R7 next week. It has the premium stereo on it. I think that means it has the stock JL Mx series 6.5” speakers with the sub. I am seriously thinking about upgrading my stereo before I even get started in it. I have heard that the Mx isn’t really that bad. Anyone have any thoughts on the stock (but upgraded) stereo that comes on the boat? I was going to put Bluave speakers in and amps and new sub to replace. I would love to hear thoughts on the stock system.

It depends on how Cobalt wired it. Read thru this R5 stereo thread about an owner who also wanted to do a little JL A upgrade. (Pay particular attention to my post on page 4.)

Personally we are JL Audio fans for inside-the-boat audio with it's accuracy, power, and new looks (not a fan of the old style horizontal radiator grill look) and Wet Sounds fans for outside-the-boat raw power, sensitivity using horn speaker drivers, and complementing tower looks.

Bluave has a nice product although I’ve never heard a Bluave system in person (only videos). IMHO their speakers are a little bulky looking with a too in your face thick facade for my taste. They have only been around for a few years but are making an impression in the marine audio market. They do have some killer subs and I’m always a fan of uniqueness as long as the quality, reputation, and customer support are there to back their product....kinda like a Cobalt (although with 50+ years of experience). 😉

Yes I never heard of them. Big loto speaker and custom group. Lots of money doing those systems. Reading a bit on them. There 9 inch I guess is actually 8 inch. Wet Sounds stopped years ago what they are doing now. Also sounds like old tech in the speakers. They push power to them though. I don't mind the looks of them but they do look alot like a J L to me. I would go with JL or Wet Sounds. Sorry and seeing it already has JL in it why change. I've heard some pretty kick ass JL systems. Gdane has one of them on here.

Yeah just makes me think I should look at wiring and power from amps and look at keeping at what I have and I could change it up during the winter if I didn’t like the sound

Exactly. Hate to (r)amp up with not very good results. Pun intended. :D. Easy to check by looking at the amps and amount of speakers you have. 👌

With his being a new boat compared to the other it very well could be wired correctly now.

I guess I was just thinking it would be nice to get it the way I wanted out the door. I may just have my stereo guy take a look and let me know what he thinks. I have WetSounds in my boat now and like them. I think he carries these and Bluave and maybe is pushing Bluave now.

You would think. Unfortunately mass marketing and public perception drive engineering decisions. “Look honey 12-14 speakers!”
And now that Malibu owns them....hmmm. #bu’sfault. ;)
Again, easy to check.

He looked thru the boat today and we have decided to change the in boat speakers and the sub to an enclosed sub if possible and leave the amps and head unit. So hoping that I will be happy with this. He is picking up and changing next week before I take possession of the boat, which should be end of next week.

This is exactly what I'd be doing. The Bluave speakers are a bit fatiguing to my ear, and I like the JL Audio better. I'd at least give them a good extended listening before paying to put them in my boat. If you do like the sound, I'd also compare then to MB Quart's Nautic Premium (in price and in sound) before pulling the trigger.

But, dedicated wiring and amps can help your current system, or any system you might put in going forward. I don't think you'll be sad about what you've already got, but it's always fun to tinker and try to make it better. I ended up picking up some Roswell coaxials (similar in sound to JL) to replace the Kicker speaker that came with my boat, and am looking forward to getting them installed this summer. Keep us posted on what you do!

Too late John. He doesn't wait for anything. If he wants it is going in. Done! No messing around.

So dad I have to ask what system was in the Nautique? Any pictures?
