Moving along nicely! Mine doesn’t have that fuel filter insulator, is there a part number on it?

Does not look like yours had it.

Injectors are done and being shipped today. (hopefully)

He's sending me the gaskets I need and a new ignition coil as well.

Will be able to start reassembling the engine.

Also bought 4 qts. of Merc lower unit gear lube and new bilge vent hose too.

Now I need to relocate the oil filter, install new oil lines, and install the exhaust. (fingers crossed)

Interesting, looks like it should fit my application. Wonder how effective it is and if it’s worth exploring.

If you don't have vapor lock issues, prob not needed. If you do, I think there's an update kit available for it.

Glad i did these now.

John said the seals and grommets were overdue for replacement. (22 yrs old)

Got new seals, grommets and different fuel filters installed. He also is shipping the gaskets needed for installation.

Highly recommend Boats Unlimited. Around $350 for the service.

Really if he's shooting for 100ml only 2 we're way off. Not bad.

Looks like he got them dialed in good. Curious if it will make a noticeable difference. In my experience flow matching the injectors carries the most impact in forced induction applications where cycle duty and PWM play a huge role in safe tuning.

Yeah, not bad for being 22 yrs old. Only 2 being that far off.

I'd have to think that 2 cyls running rich would waste fuel and hurt a minimal amount of performance, but you don't know until you test them.

Piece of mind knowing seals are new and injectors are good to go.

Not to mention the other stuff you find that's in poor shape along the way that gets replaced. My vacuum hose about fell off the fitting on one and is plugged on the other.

The sales guy ended up taking the boat for a joy ride. Whether it was intentional or not, I don't know. But that short ride left a fair amount of soot on the transom. I'd have to guess that it was running extremely rich for that to happen.

Mercury went pretty fat on the early EFI tunes. Not sure why, but lots of Cobalt owners seem to experience sooty transoms. I know with my Whipple tune they leaned it out quite a bit, much cleaner transom as a result.

I feel you on all the surprises along the way. I’m honestly amazed how well it ran with all the stuff I’m finding.

I've been seriously considering an ECM "tune" too. Just want another one so I can keep the stock tune if I don't like it.

Injectors, ignition coil and gaskets arrived yesterday.

Got sister B day today, so no worky on boat.

Was ‘98 MEFI 1 or 3? Post the serial number off the back of the ECM and I’ll keep an eye out for one. I was lucky and got a NOS Quicksilver unit so I can swap back to stock in 10 min..

Busy, busy, busy....

Old coil no more.

New coil didn't come with mounting bracket. No big deal. The brackets are mounted with aluminum rivets. One good whack with hammer and screw driver took care of them.

Replaced the rivets with #6 machine screws and nuts. Used red loctite to keep them in place.

Moving on.

Piece of rag taped to a screwdriver. Sprayed some carb cleaner on the rag and cleaned out the injector holes

Each injector is labeled to go back into it's original hole.

New O ring, seal and grommet

New filter installed into the top replaces the "top hat" filter

Was recommended to use clear dielectric grease evenly coated on the top O ring only for installation.
