Ignition breaker size

Post by Idahocowboy »

1998 Cobalt 232 7.4gi

I need to replace the breaker protecting the ignition switch. The label is unreadable and the dealer is not sure due to the age of the boat. The schematics for my vintage don’t show on his computer. He did say its either a 10A or 20A. Not much help. Thanks in advance.

Hey IC. Welcome to the Cobaltchat forum. So glad you found us!

Are you talking about the 50 amp breaker on the top of the engine? Got a pic of it?

Btw, thanks for posting pics of your Cobalt.

And welcome aboard mate!

Thanks for your response. Sorry if I wasn’t specific enough and I can’t get a pic right now. There are a series of breakers on each circuit located on the dash. They pop out if there is a short or overload. This one is located right above the key/ignition on the dashboard. The breaker pushes through the dash and is secured by a nut. I’m surprised I can’t find a wiring diagram on the web somewhere.

I had the same problem the boat stopped and would not start until I swapped the ignition breaker out with another’s were out on the water in a rain storm of coarse
No size listed on the originals
I replaced most of the breakers in my boat, replacements are available in 10,15 & 20
Attached are the replacements I bought last year and the suppler I found on the web

Thank you. I think I’ll buy a 15 and a 20 and go with the 15. If it keeps popping, I’ll install the 20. Thank you all and good boating. BTW, I live near Sandpoint Idaho on Lake Pend Oreille. Thursday night, a huge storm came through. There was a boat that capsized with 10 people on board. One drowned. Winds were estimated at 60MPH. I’m sure it was a wake boat. Please pay attention to the weather and make sure you have enough life jackets on board. Put them on if it gets dicey and get the **** off the lake. It’s not uncommon to have 3-4 foot waves on this lake. So sad. Everyone take care and stay safe.
