Trim problem

Just purchased a 2002 226 with the Volvo Penta SX 5.7ltr. Trim works up and down in static state but under power (moving fwd at little more than idle), it will not trim up. I can trim it up before I take off and it stays in position fine at all speeds so I don’t believe the rams are bi-passing. I found no visible leaks whatsoever and fluid level is good. The motor does seem pretty loud especially trimming up. My gut tells me I need to replace the motor but I would like advice from people more knowledgeable than me. Or should I change the whole motor/pump/reservoir unit?

Change it as a unit. I wouldn't think your rams are bad. Volvo had some issues with a distribution block on the outside where the lines connect to. Just make sure it's ok. I think your year was fine though.

Yes replace the entire unit. It’s not that expensive.

What’s the beat way to bleed the system once I change it out?

Run it up and down. You should have fluid in the rams. So really the only air you will have will be in the pump. It won't be much and after a couple cycles it will be gone. Just check the level in the down position.. It would be nice to get all of the old fluid out of the rams but that's not going to happen so make sure they are down first before taking the pump out.
