New 105amp alternator installed today. Had to swap out the fan and pulley from the old one. And it was a bit of a squeeze since the housing was slightly larger than the old 65p factory alternator. But it all fit. And check out the bench test sheet that came with the new unit. At 1600RPM it puts out as much power as the factory unit maxed out.

I tried looking up that radio on Amazon, but it’s no longer available. Any recommendations for something similar?baktasht wrote:Installed a new JVC headunit. I'm using an external amp to power the speakers, so I opted for a mid-level headunit that does what i need. Along with new 12V outlets on the outside and the middle one is a dual fast charge USB plug along with voltage readout. All on the refinished mounting plate and with new stainless hardware. I also installed a JVC remote in the swim deck area:
I’m still running with my stock Sony head unit from 2007. And no external amp. So I’m due for an upgrade.
Recommendations for a a reasonably priced amp? Also where did you find those nifty 12 volt outlets and the dual usb plug?

I just shot you an email on the JVC stero and speakers. It looks like one amazon seller still has that radio in stock. I've been happy with it so far, solid bluetooth connectivity, and the remotes are great too so that you can control it without having to reach for the headunit.Titaniumboy wrote: Thu Jul 23, 2020 4:37 am I tried looking up that radio on Amazon, but it’s no longer available. The USB outlets I added I got here. I got the fast charging ones so that they have plenty of juice to charge up a dead phone:
And the 12v cigadapter I got here:
For the speakers (not the subwoofer), I'm using the Infinity REF-704A. One of the most under-rated amplifiers, super clear sound, and tons of power. It runs my 8x Polk DB652's without even breaking a sweat.
And it is priced so low that it doesn't even make sense.
For a subwoofer, you really want to size the amplifier according to which subwoofer(s) you are using. My subwoofer is pretty power hungry so I went with an Infinity Kappa K1000.

Video of alternator upgrade for those thinking about doing the same upgrade:
Re: 1999 Cobalt 232 restoration
Made a new alternator wire and bypassed the factory one. Old one was 10 gauge. This one is two gauge. I also ran it directly to the main battery switch that goes to the bus bar instead of the factory routing which connected it to the starter first. Should make for much more efficient power transfer and less voltage loss too. Who knows maybe I'll pick up a little bit of power from better spark.

This thread has been fantastic! Some friends and I recently purchased a 1998 252 8.2L mercruiser and captains call. It needs some TLC and I have a ton of questions for you if you have time.

The new alternator has been great. I typically sat between 13volts - 14volts mostly. Now I sit at a solid 14.7 when cruising and around 13.8volta at idle. Very happy with the upgrade so far.

That’s awesome. I need to see what the 252 sits at while cruising around, this might be a needed upgrade with the 3 amplifiers the guy installed.
Re: 1999 Cobalt 232 restoration
Have tried a few different mirrors over the last several years and never really been that happy with any of them. Finally decided to take a shot on another one for the Cobalt 232 and I think I have found the perfect one (for me). It is large and has a massive field of view. And it is rock solid once it is mounted. It is also very easy to remove. And it has soft padding at the mount points so that the windshield frame is unharmed when mounting and unmounting. I'm going to try it mounted this way, and also mounted the other way to where the mirror sits above the windshield.

You're so right! I think I still have my old 9" b&w sitting in the attic. And another one the same size that is color with a vcr tape player under the screen.
