BobRae99 wrote: Wed Aug 12, 2020 3:36 am That is what I wrote above (several pages back) after asking my contact at Cobalt. So it’s a couple of mph off the speed of an R5 with the same power for a boat weighing almost 1,000 lbs more. Impressive.
gear and prop changes can do wonders :D
You may be right. I think we have to wait and see what the prop charts say. My understanding is that they weren't completed by the time of the reveal, but I doubt that and must have done water test to confirm, but I was told they hadn't been done as of July 10th. I think the design team would have had to know what the boat would perform like during the design phase though.

I'm looking for a combination of a quick plane time and good top speed. I didn't see the value (for my purposes) of a V8430 with a top speed of 60 mph and a 4 second time to plane vs the V*350 I chose with a 53 mph top speed and a 3 second time to plane. We do a lot of skiing and less cruising. A soon as I have a prop chart, I'm happy to share it.
I think a lot more information will come out next month as I've been told that is when the surf and OB model will be revealed.

I never thought I'd be interested in a surf model but after trying it over the past couple of week ends behind my friend's Centurion, I think I'm hooked. If my kids pick it up I might consider one, otherwise, between me and my friend, we have the best of both worlds. :)

if the R8 can get 50mph with a good hole shot I wouldnt be opposed to a surf version. That price tag though.....I could get an R30 cheaper. Crazy.

Depth can fluctuate but usually 5.5 to 6.5’ . The shallowest I’ve seen it was around 5 ‘

I don't see the attraction of an outboard unless it is for saltwater use, but to each his own. I doubt this engine would make the cut but perhaps the 400R will. Is an outboard a quicker package than the same horsepower in a sterndrive?

Yes, power to weight on an outboard is much better than an I/O.

Doesnt the duoprop help with this? at least in terms of hole shot/quickness?

Kinda, it certainly improves low to mid range performance compared to a single prop I/O, but suffers up top due to additional drag. The way outboards are rigged you can adjust the x dimension to optimize bow lift and increase top end. Cobalt puts their outdrives low, so the same cobalt equipped with a outboard will probably perform better at the expense of real estate on swim platform, assuming both have the same HP rating.

How is that possible? An engine is an engine, regardless of packaging. What are they leaving out of the outboard? Cooling loop and heat exchanger?

oh OB way outperforms a I/O all day long. Power transfer is right to the prop.

Outdrive, hydraulics, u-joints, huge cast iron manifolds, not to mention the parasitic loss. Still rather have an I/O unless I had to boat in salt.
