End of the season for us and my boat was hauled out on Friday. I had been experiencing a vibration which is felt through the seat and is most apparent at around 3,000 RPM. I didn't try running the engine up to 3,000 in neutral before I hauled it out, but the dealer (who hauled the boat out for me) said that often vibration can result from a nicked or otherwise damaged prop.

When the boat was hauled out, I noticed a bit of scratching on the end of one blade on the rear prop and a very slight dent (rear prop - blade in the 9:00 position). Dealer isn't sure if that would cause the vibration (he felt it on a short drive before we hauled the boat out), but sales it is possible.

What do you guys think? Is the prop responsible?

Pretty sure it was the prop and the Tank underneath it cleaning that algae off of it

Yes as BigBlock noted it was the very small "ding" in the prop that was causing it. I had both tested and balanced and the small ding removed. Smooth as butter this season.

I'm getting excited about the R6 Surf reveal. If the wave quality compares to some of the dedicated surf boats and the cost addition from stern drive to bow rider is similar to the R5 to R5 Surf, I think I'd give it a look. A base R5 with tower and VP350 is $130,934 and a surf model with the same equipment is $163,310, so about a $30,000 cost for the surf boat.

I've been thinking a lot about moving up to the R6 but it is only adding about 2' of boat length (and a head). Maybe it's not enough to justify eating the depreciation on the R3 for just 2' that may not be very noticeable compared to my current boat. The R8 is just more boat than we need, so maybe the R6 Surf with a VP380 or 430 is the sweet spot for me? A bit more length plus a new surfing toy to play with?

Me too, but I'm on Lake Winnipeg. I sailed for 10 years on Lake of Woods and in an annual race to Warroad MN, which is about 30 miles across and can blow up pretty nicely. The rest of the lake is amazing. Thousands of islands and you can always find a bay with quiet water to ski or surf in.

I think the R8 is just too big. We actually don't find we are short of room on the R3 so the R6 would add a couple of seats and if I went Surf, some additional fun. I just worry about hitting the forward drive though.

I really do not get what’s taking them so long to release the surf. We all know it’s done they have just been slow playing the releases. My guess is they hope to sell as many r3/5/7 surfs as they can prior to release?

I’m not sure that is it, they are selling R5/R6 along side each other for a time and will do so with R7/R8.

I just joined a gym for the first time since the early 90s. Got a lot of work to do.
We'll probably hit close to 150 hours before our season ends.

We'll probably hit close to 150 hours before our season ends.

I won't be 63 until December I keep in pretty good shape (could lose a few pounds though) but surfing is actually much easier on the body than skiing (I haven't tried wakeboarding yet - next summer). I dropped my boat and marina key at the dealership today - they are going out to my lake later in the week to haul the boat out and winterize. I took a few minutes to look at a Malibu 23 Surf they have in the showroom. My initial thoughts on the forward drive is that it is too exposed, but after having a good look under the Malibu (V Drive), I'd say that massive single 4 blade prop would get just as trashed as a forward drive if you hit an underwater object. We'll see about a new boat next spring - it seems like a long way off.
