After 34 years of owning Regal boats - we switched to a Cobalt
Re: After 34 years of owning Regal boats - we switched to a Cobalt
Thanks so much. I read about the adjustment screw on the friction plate but one of the sites I checked stated that if the tension (ie tightness) is not there when revving the boat in neutral, then it's a cable issue and not the friction adjustment screw.
I'd much rather it be a simple adjustment but another question for this group.... Is there a way to lube the cable vs replace?

Yea. I was afraid of that. Any idea on the cost? I had a few replaced on my Regal Mercs over the years but I'm guessing it may be a bit more involved (&expensive) on the Cobalt's Volvo.
Thx

I don't know the cost but honestly it isn't any harder on a volvo it may even be easier. Akro I think just did his. I think the cable is under $200 and Prob under $200 in labor. Just guessing.gallitony wrote: Thu Oct 15, 2020 6:51 pm Yea. I was afraid of that. Any idea on the cost? Make sure you look go in the bilge area and look at your cables and make sure there are no sharp bend. Nice easy curves. I'm surprised yours is bad or would be bad already.

Thx for the quick reply. This is the best forum I've ever been on.
I'll have to check it out in the spring. We just dropped off the boat for winter storage.
One other question....
When the engine is running, I hear a hum (sounds like the bilge pump is running). My son said he heard that the Volvos have issues with the fuel pump. Any insight on that?

Don't get paranoid with the fuel pump whine or you will not sleep.
Yes there is a issue but there also is a issue with merc. Both brands I don't know why the engineers decided its a great idea to paint the inside of these pumps. They must have a reason and they are much smarter than I am. But I /we fix there issues. So the fuel pump is supposed to make a hum noise. That's a good noise like landing gear locking in place. If you don't hear them bad things happen.
So the whine is a very high squealing noise. You know when it's bad. If you turn your key on and listen don't start the engine you will hear the fuel pump run for 2 seconds. If that's the same noise you now know what he is hearing.
Believe it or not your car does the same thing.
On my boat I also let the pump cycle before starting it. I think it just helps it.

I know the fuel pump kicks on when starting up but I hear it all the time. Is that normal?

I'm going to say yes. But if it's screaming at you then no.gallitony wrote: Thu Oct 15, 2020 8:23 pm I know the fuel pump kicks on when starting up but I hear it all the time. Is that normal?

Hopefully, it'll be a slow process if it is ready to go.

Welcome to the world of Cobalt. Love the boat. Looks like you did well; she’s really clean. Hope you get to enjoy her before you have to put her up for the winter.
