Never underestimate the water - especially SF Bay. Scott Smith of the late 70's - 80's rock band Loverboy lost his life sailing his 37' boat out of SF Bay in November 2000. I am good friends with his sister - it was devastating. He was heading south for the winter with two non experienced passengers and went off the track and onto the Potato Patch shoal in rough weather and was knocked down repeatedly by 27'+ waves and was washed overboard. He was never found. If only he had waited the rough weather out.carrera wrote: Mon Nov 16, 2020 11:16 am Great thread as I am now buying a boat for Tahoe (have my own buoy on west shore) and want a surf model for my boys. The story above about the afternoon trip across the lake made me nervous just reading it! Had a similar adventure years ago on a sailboat on SF Bay. Have driven a Mastercraft for years on a dedicated ski lake, but never a stern drive on a big lake...so I have much to learn.
So, bigger is usually better, but being cautious will win the day.
