Houseboat is slipped at Bullfrog...we usually go north. In the past we haven't gone further than Moki because I just didn't trust my old Monterey any more...but this next summer will probably venture further away from Bullfrog to get rid of the crowds. I still haven't figured out how I'm going to tie off the new R3....whether I will try and bumper the heck out of her to keep the rash off from the houseboat or if I will drop an anchor and then tie the back off of the beach...we have had lots of problems the last couple summers with "neighbors" running by us either wakeboarding/surfing or just sight seeing at about half throttle....literally within 30-40 feet of the back of the houseboat...with kids in the water. Does a number on my nerves for the safety of my kids as well as trying to keep a brand new R3 looking new this next summer. We wakeboard and tube but always courteous and stay away from other houseboats. Did find a sweet spot last summer on our last trip tucked in around a corner in the end of a side canyon....houseboat stuck out just far enough that people could see it was the end of the road and would come in partially but turn and go right back out. That spot actually had 2 old cottonwood tree trunks sticking up far enough apart that I could tie both ends of the boat off between them.kas232ca wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 1:23 pmGrand Junction has gotten pretty nice over the years. She looks so happy!
Have you lived in Grand Junction for a while? My wife grew up there and father-in-law still lives there.
Do you houseboat out of Halls or Bullfrog? For the first time last year we went to the south end of the lake as it is closer to where the boat is kept and we enjoyed it, but I think I prefer the northern end of the lake better. We used to camp at Hite or Farley until the water got too low.
This sucks!

Lol DustinM.....back in my younger years I spent more time airborn on one of those than i did with the tracks hooked up on the ground....Started riding on an old 1979 Arctic Cat Trailcat and progressed upwards through MANY improvements....last ride was an 800 Mountain Cat....machines now are even a huge improvement over that one with the deeper paddle tracks and suspension but i always had a knack for burying them and the heavier the machines got, the harder it was to get them free. Fun for sure but kids came along and I gave it up...these days I prefer the benefits of the snow once it melts and hits Lake Powell....lol.

My wife's best friend's husband takes her daughter hunting like that all the time. It doesn't get any better. That picture reminded me of them.

Re: This sucks!
I would definitely anchor the R3 and tie the stern to the shore. You sure don't want to be worrying about a storm coming up at night with her tied to the houseboat and will ride out the wakes as well from the wakeboard boats. I sure you have seen what the wind can do out there. Many years ago during an afternoon storm, our EZ-UP blew into the 5th wheel with enough force to penetrate the outer skin of the RV right by my head.Elkhunter2372 wrote: Fri Nov 13, 2020 2:27 pmHouseboat is slipped at Bullfrog...we usually go north. Re: This sucks!
No box anchor yet...have always used a danforth style...but didn't ever anchor the old boat much other than to let the kids swim while we took a break or sometimes while fishing. I just watched a youtube video on the box anchor....they look very cool but simple to set. Do you personally have experience with them in the wind? I had thought about getting one of those small floating mooring balls and just leaving the anchor while we are there....basically just unhooking when we leave with the boat but leaving the anchor set in place and then just having to reattach the anchor line and then reset the stern line to the bank....any suggestions on size of box anchor?kas232ca wrote: Tue Nov 17, 2020 11:08 amI would definitely anchor the R3 and tie the stern to the shore. Re: This sucks!
When we got our Cobalt 2 years ago, I bought the medium (maybe small) Box Anchor as a Christmas gift for the wife from Amazon. She was thrilled...
Before we used it, I took it into the Slide Anchor store in Lake Havasu City https://www.slideanchor.com/ I showed them the boat, and asked if the medium was OK for the boat and they said it was until I told them we like to go to Lake Powell, then he highly suggested the large Box Anchor due to the wind, so they exchanged it. We have not used it at Lake Powell as last time we were there we stayed in a hotel. I did throw out a small Danforth once as I didn't feel like pulling up the Box Anchor to fish and it did not hold well.
The large Box Anchor is heavy and after used a few times, it is hard to get the set pin in place. I think I need to lube it. I dropped it on my foot once too. We keep the Box Anchor under the bow cushion as it is really hard to get it out of the anchor locker. We use it when we park on the sandbar at the mouth of Lake Havasu and it holds very well with the current. It's nice as it does not require a chain either.
We also have one of the elastic lines so you can put the stern right near shore and after unloading let the boat float back out to the anchor line. Sometimes it's a bit more hassle than it's worth though if the water is nice enough for a swim.
Just don't drop it on your foot.
The mooring ball works great. That is what we have done before with the jet skis. We just use a partial pool noodle.
Forgot to add - The mooring balls are also a good way to 'widen' your camping spot to hopefully avoid neighbors coming in too close.
