Possible new 200 owner--help pls
Hi,
I joined this forum to hopefully get some advice before buying so I make a good decision for me, my family and my wallet.
Looking at private sale just down the street from me. Listing description:
"2005 Cobalt 220. he boat was stored inside for its whole life and the condition of the gel coat and the interior shows. It has been well maintained having all routine maintenance done!. It is equipped with a 5.7 liter Volvo Penta Gi engine rated at 280 HP mated to the duo-prop outdrive. The engine has about 478 hours on it and it always starts, provides plenty of power, and runs so quietly and smoothly that all you hear at idle. Asking $16.500. "
It's a beautiful looking boat. Pics attached. Looks to me like a great deal and might not last long. But I know next to nothing about stern drives, or Coblats, so I'm doing as much homework as I can before I see it this weekend. I've had lots of v-hull outboard fishing boats in the 14-18 range. (Prior to seeing and considering this beauty, I was looking for higher-end Lunds, like an outfitted Alaskan. Different worlds, I understand...) Kids are older now, are tired of putting around watching me fish, and are excited about fun on a boat like this. My questions:
1. Is this a good deal, as I suspect?
2. Issues in particular I should look for?
3. I've mostly been a lake boater. But I've had a yearning to take the family around the harbor. Will occasional saltwater use, flushed a couple hours later when I get home, cause harm? Is this only raw water cooling? Is this really a lake-only boat? (if so, not a deal killer)
4. Can this boat survive winter home storage, assuming I winterize properly, including shrink wrap? Or is this really meant to be a garage storage queen? Is this too much boat for a driveway kind of owner, if ya know what I mean?
5. What might I expect to spend, generally speaking, on annual repairs and routine maintenance, which I'd hope to do myself mostly? (I'm a DIY and perform most repair and maintenance on my truck and cars (e.g. recently finished resto of mid 70s vet and sold this summer).
Thanks for any and all responses -- positive, discouraging or otherwise.

Is a great boat! Have you Gurren any replies from them? I've failed to get any. I think that's a scam. It's about 10k too cheap. So be careful.

That is a great deal if it local and you can hand them money by hand, I would not wire any deposits. The boat in the pictures appears to be a 220 and your title says 200 along with the price, this creates doubt by me.

Also great lakes marine is in Michigan. I forgot where I saw that CL ad. Plus if you search CL is in multiple states.

Hey Mike7277. Welcome to the Cobaltchat forum. So glad you found us!
Have you met the owners right down the street from you? Yes this seems too good to be true. ..even if he were a real good friend.
The 220 is a tried and true model with the venerable 350. Great boat for you and the kids. It’s more of a lake boat but occasional saltwater use is not a deal killer if you rinse and pull her out every time.
Post a couple of pics from your prior boat ownerships.
And again welcome aboard mate!

Re: Possible new 200 owner--help pls
My best friends dad lost an eBay auction on an rv. Received a message the winner backed out did he want it for his last bid? So it was outside eBay. He wired $19000 to the seller.
The money went to an account in Atlanta and immediately out of the country. Law enforcement will only pursue if over $20k.
Turns out the rv wasn’t in Florida but in Massachusetts and was not for sale.
Be careful.

Crap. If it sounds too good to be true...I can usually spot a fake CL ad (Ive flag lots of Lund boat and classic car ads, as I'm always on the prowl, esp cars), but not knowing colbalts this one slipped past me. Even the homes looked like my town's. Anyway, very glad I joined here and will keep looking for a 200. The more I read, and look, the more I'm feeling hooked. My son is already scouting wakeboards! Still would appreciate any thoughts on winter -- can these be responsibly prepped and stored at home outside. (I always bring my outboards inside for the winter.)
Thanks a lot guys.

Yes please post. Most of us know these boats very well. Most of us have a disease where we can't stop looking at boats that are for sale.
The 200/220 is a great boat.
Yes you can store them outside in the winter as long as you winterize and shrink wrap is a bonus. Or just pay few hundred bucks and get inside storage.

Glad you took the Buyer Beware route. Yes, you can store it outside with a mooring cover as long as it’s winterized properly. You can add a skirt to help minimize any UV fading on the hull.

Ok, if I may trouble you kind folks again. Still on the hunt and found something possibly interesting that I hope and believe is not a hoax. This is MUCH less money than I'm prepared to spend...but it might just be a decent ride for short money, wanting a bit of elbow grease, found locally (not easy so far). I'll post the ad and pics to save u the trouble of clicking through stuff. What do ya all think (and thanks again for sharing your wisdom):
17 FT Bow rider EX cond - $5,895 -- 17 FT colbolt bow rider in ex cond 322 hours in clock. turn key ready all serviced with new bellows new u joints shifting cables plus more have all service records on the boat ..this boat is deep wider beam than most boats its size great for fishing water sports and family fun also comes with galvie trailer in ex cond also have video of boat in the water running a few weeks ago ..the boat is all winterized and shrink warped And if someone is interested in buying they will have free storage for the winter if needed

Great little engine and great drive. Post the ad. It might be a salty boat though.
