Cooling System

I'm the new owner of a 2005 Cobalt 200 with a Volvo Penta 5.0GXi-E engine. It appears to be in great condition, but I'm still getting familiar with the systems.

In anticipation of starting it up in the spring in order to change the oil before launching it, I'm wondering about the cooling system: can I simply connect a garden hose to the fitting with the blue cap in the engine compartment, or do I need to use muffs? I'm getting mixed messages from the guys at our local marina.

While I'm here, after how many hours do you typically replace the impeller?

I answered your pm. Yes that is the only way I connect my boat. Your fine. Change your impeller now then every other year.

Thanks, everybody. The boat, one "Skogan," named after a troll of family lore, is at our lake place two states away, so I don't have pictures to share just yet. I appreciate the advice and confirmation that I can run the engine without muffs, using only the garden hose attachment.
