24 sx steering issue

Post by Tampadan »

New to the chat group. I have a 2006 24sx that I have been refurbishing. A few weeks ago the steering became difficult. I pulled the ram and had it rebuilt and have refitted. The ram works great without the steering cable attached. When I attach the steering cable, it will not activate the ram shuttle valve. With the steering cable off the ram, the wheel turns easily and does not seem to be binding anywhere. Once reattached to the ram the steering becomes stiff again and does not activate the PAS shuttle valve. Is there and adjustment I am missing or is there some trick to getting this working? I am slightly perplexed and I don't want to pull a new steering cable unless it is necessary.

Hey TD...welcome to the CobaltChat forum. So glad you found us!

Dumb questions but I'm sure you checked the power steering pump (pretty reliable really) or checked for any gunked up/hardened grease on any of the cable ends correct? I don't know of any adjustments on that valve. It sounds like from the helm on down everything is working.

Can you provide any pictures?
Others will chime in shortly.

Let's get you back on the water steering freely....and again, welcome aboard mate!

Thanks for the reply. I have cleaned and greased the cable end that enters the ram and the ram rod has been greased as well. The teleflex cable when attached does not seem to actuate the shuttle valve on the ram. The power steering pump seems to be ok since it moves the ram when detached from the teleflex cable and I operate the ram with my hand. I hate to just guess at the issue, but at this point I think its the teleflex cable. It doesn't seem to bind when unattached, but possibly binds when positioned to attach to the ram. I will take a few pics and post them. Unfortunately, i work odd hours and have to start and stop working on this issue.

Update: Sorry so slow to get back to this. Replaced the steering cable, all 30 feet of it. An considering I am a six footer it was difficult squeezing into a few of the tight spaces. I then rebled the power steering system and now it is back to normal. Thank you for responding to this issue. I have learned more about power assisted steering than I wanted to.
