The musical generation gap.

I've been to a huge amount of concerts, with my son literally seeing over a hundred shows. He will go see anyone.

I can't figure out what had happened to what makes today's music, other than the focus is no longer on the actual musical talent. Now it's about dancing, choreography, back up dancers and crap like that, with the actual musicians making the music missing, as in tucked off to the side of the stage where they don't get in the way of all of the dancers..
This generation now seem to watch music, rather than listen to music.

So last week, I took my son and one of my employees to see Roger Waters in Pittsburgh. My son asks me half way through it if this is good". You know, right in the middle of "Us and Them. . He wasn't being a smart ass, he seriously has never heard Pink Floyd music other than Money, and can not relate to, or understand the genius of it.
He says he's about music you can dance to.. ok, so is my daughter, and all of their friends... he hasn't heard Floyd, but definitely knows about "lucius", the blond wigged back up singers touring with Roger. I guess they are a group. Who knew...
Dear God, what has happened to real musical artists? They are replaced by the American Idol mouthpieces...

I guess I'm caught in a generation gap. You couldn't pay me to see Lady GaGa, or Katy Perry...literally.
I'm getting old I guess...

Oh now this is a good topic... And I'm going to go out on a limb and say I might be a few years older than your kids.. Just guessing they are somewhere in their 20s...but I have found myself making more comments to my teenage nephew about his taste in music... It does make me feel old and that makes me sad. But I spend a lot of time on the road with work and I appreciate a lot of music genres... But you are right music is different from your generation to mine to the kids now. I love classic country like George Jones, Conway Twitty, hank and dolly because my Grandma loves it. But there's always a day I just need a good hip-hop rap day as I drive all over! I have to teach my "kids" what good rap is because the crap they listen to today isnt good!

I'm into the old standards.. you know, Alice In Chains, Tool, and all of the grunge stuff. I still look at Led Zeppelin as the best ever and Floyd as musical genius.
I'll take some of my employees to a concert every year. We've seen a ton of shows over the years. Zombie & Manson may be an exception to the talented musician's we've seen, but it's entertaining. My daughter did love Rob Zombie, which was a shocker...
The only show my son could really get into was when we saw The Rolling Stones. They were still crushing it, even though they are all geriatrics..

But the stuff that is called pop music today is just sad, sad, sad, which makes me o-l-d...

Man does Waters put on a great show. Too bad he is one messed up individual. I mean--he is out there--especially his views on Israel.

That being said, I'm a big Pink Floyd fan as well. Fortunately my kids have not gone to the "as seen on TV production line pop music" that's being mass produced these days.

My oldest loves John Williams. All his movie soundtracks are always playing in our home on Alexa.

My middle child LOVES Zeppelin. But his passion is trumpet and idol is Doc Severinsen.

My 16 year old daughter loves 80's rock and Paul Mcartney and wings.

Me--I'm a big Audiophile geek who appreciates all artists--except the American Idol scene that you talk about. Yes Roger Water's show is amazing even if I have only experienced it on DVD. I'm jealous T!

Music ( both recorded and live ) is always playing in our home and is a HUGE part of our lives. (even on the boat playlists are flowing)

Ain't that the truth, T. He has a major hang up/bizarre fascination about his grandfather and his war experiences.

Despite that, Water's Amused To Death album (particularly the Ballad of Bill Hubbard) I have recently enjoyed.

Again, live must be amazing. --and I, like you, have seen my share of concerts.....well maybe not over 100.

I do like some of his music taste though. The Bombay Bicycle Club, Lorde, John Bellion etc. good stuff.

One of the best concerts I've ever been too. Saw them years ago at the Wisconsin Badger Stadium. They are by far my fav band. I could listen to Edge all night long.
Some how missed this whole thread. So more tomorrow.
