New Boat Delivery Delays (Resin shortage)

Post by TheCaliAnne »

What is everyone hearing on the current resin and supply chain shortages impacting Spring 2021 new boat delivery dates? How delayed was your delivery?

Ours has maintained the course with no delays in sight. I have directly asked Cobalt.

In our R8 Surf order the dealer told me on January the production date was scheduled for April 1st, on February it was scheduled for April 7, on March it was scheduled for April 13, and yesterday the dealer send me another email saying it wasn't in production which on April 24 he told me the boat was being built and we should be expecting it soon, and now the email said the production was delayed again to May 4th. Beside that, the past month my dealer informed me that they were not gonna be an authorized dealer for Cobalt anymore and us and a few other customers were the last orders, apparently the closest authorized dealer is 500 miles away. I don't know what to expect now.

Well that is very disheartening. It is not however Cobalt delaying the build, it more than likely due to commercial reasons between the dealer and Cobalt.

With Tilly's not a dealer, I was going to suggest Boulder Boats in Henderson, but I see they aren't a Cobalt listed dealer anymore either.

CaliAnne - They started production of my R8 Surf 3/23, which was a couple weeks later than originally slated. Still waiting for more detail on completion date but hoping it will be within next few weeks. My dealer also indicated the winter storms in Texas were the cause for delays due to resign supply.

Dustin - Are you communicating directly with Cobalt or thru your dealer?

Wish everyone the best with receiving their boats soon!!!!

Both. I communicated with the dealer and he gave a general time frame as when it would be done but really don't get hung up on the fine details. When I contacted Cobalt they were more detailed and gave dates. I guess I really can't say if they were blowing smoke but they have no reason to do so.
I should also mention that from the time we ordered the boat we wanted a late build date so we could tour and see ours be made as we were hoping the whole covid deal would be out of the way by now. I also didn't want to even have it until our season starts.

Hello all. I am having a similar experience with my R6 outboard. Was originally slated for 2/9 start date with mid/late march completion. Delayed a few times now and has started production about a week ago. I am being told completion date 6/8 if no more issues.

As for the resin shortage. It is real. Hope im not being repetitive but stems from the Texas freeze and now am hearing a shortage of truck drivers is effecting the entire shipping industry. Cobalt is not the only one dealing with the resin problem. I picked up a boat trailer last week and the trailer builder said many manufactures are in the same boat. haha. He stated the Texas freeze too. Two days ago I received an email letter from cobalt via the dealer stating cobalt was shutting down a day here and day there to offset the resin shortage. Letter stated they have shut down 4 times already for one day.

Hope no more delays. NO FUN WAITING!

Guys this is going to affect us for the next 2 years. We can't get door panels made for vehicles and windshields for boats and seats for everything even furniture. Mercury can't get parts they are behind. They are working 3 shifts trying to catch up too. So Patient's gents!

Well this thread got me to thinking and I reached out to my contacts. I found our boat will be delayed now, to when IDK. I went back thru my emails and found the one from Cobalt and at that time in late March everything was OK. What a difference a month makes.

We initially set a build date in hopes that covid would be in the rear view and we could tour the factory to see our boat built and would also it help with storage issues. That is all hind sight now wish we would have just had it built last fall and paid the dealer to store it.

Dustin - Very sorry to hear and fingers crossed that things aren’t pushed back too long for you. When was your build scheduled to start?
