2017 220S

Post by Flathead Lake »

Have had my 220S Cobalt (all white hull with gray Classic stripe and Tahoe Gray interior) now for 3 months. Just put it away for the Winter. The Cobalt is my 4th boat. I started with a 1985 16' Bayliner, then a 1990 18' Glastron, then my 2000 Regal 2100 LSR. Now I am living the "Dream" with my Cobalt. I can't express in words how fantastic this boat is. I ordered it in April and it was delivered in June by Captain's Marine in Kalispell, MT. I can't say enough about my great experience with them. Options include: 350 Hp 6.2L Bravo 3 Mercuriser, Mooring Cover, Recessed Cobalt Logo, Docking Lights, Fender Clips, Transom Tilt Switch, Aft Walk-Thru Carpet, and Compass.
The only issue I have with Cobalt, is the Compass option. With the new single "eyebrow" dash introduced in the 2017 model, a "real" compass was no longer offered. The 2017 "compass" option is an 8 point (N,NE,E, SE, S, SW, W, NW) indication on the LED gauge display. This may be suitable for most people, but here in Montana on Flathead Lake (biggest fresh water lake west of the Mississippi) a true compass is necessary; especially after our horrendous fire season when visibility was reduced to less then 1 mile due to the smoke. Maybe I'm just being critical, but I'd like to hear from any other 2017 220S owners with the compass option.
Once again I appreciate being a member of this forum and look forward to hearing about everything Cobalt.

Hey welcome to the cobalt chat forum flathead lake. So glad you found us !!

Very cool boat you have there. Would love to see some pictures of it. Congrats on owning the best of the best when it comes to runabouts. 8-)

....And I totally agree with you on the compass philosophy. I need a specific heading when I cross Lake Erie to hit the tip of long point. It is usually 326 degrees to be exact.

Very disappointed to see cobalt change to the newer style compasses. Of course there is always your smart phone compass when things get into a pinch

Welcome Flathead! Glad you joined and look forward to pictures of your boat! We're big on pictures here. I have a compass in my boat so can't speak to your LED issues. I'm sure some of the guys with newer boats will chime in. This is a great group of folks and if you like you're Cobalt, a good place to hang out!

Hey, thank's for the replies. Even though I'm a retired engineer and HVAC/Sheetmetal contractor, I'm old and will ask my 13 year old Grandson to help me with a pic.

You guys are kill'n me here with all this Big Block power. Please know the 6.2L 350 Hp Mercruiser was the largest power offered for my Cobalt. I get 54 mph at 5400 rpm (2893' elevation) with 91 octane no ethanol gas. Have 26 pitch props from the factory (4 blade front and 3 blade rear). Tried a set of 3 blade 28 pitch props and gained 3 mph (5200 rpm), but totally lost my hole shot. Couldn't live with that because this old guy still makes a deep water start on my fitted front/rear boot Kidder! Looking to have a "little" cup added to the rear prop. My Regal did 66 mph with a 5.7L 280 hp Volvo SX drive. My 220S is a far better boat, but I must admit I miss the 60+mph top end.

That sounds like typical results out of a 220. How do you like the new engine? Tell us how she performs. Good hole shot, mid-range, smooth. I would say you could try a set of 4x4 props but I'm not promoting them by any means after my experience with them. You won't gain much even if you had a few more pennies under the hood. That hull just hits a wall. The torque is what I really like. It didn't matter who is on board and where they are in the boat. Love the fact you still ski. I love skiing but I'm afraid my back wouldn't like me much. I still have the old EP in the garage. My son will use it sometimes.Again welcome aboard.

Flathead, welcome from Ky. We have similar boats. Just got mine in April this year. I also have white hull but red stripe. I have the 280 hp Volvo, top end 50. My 4th boat and also love it. I wish the Bimini was slightly longer. We got sea grass carpet, fender clips. I'm also "experienced",turned 70 last week but don't ski anymore. You'll learn these guys on here (and gals Katy) need some elderly advice occasionally so help me out.
