At some point the upper must have failed and they replaced it with an older MR-1 style upper. Ive tried using an older MR-1 gasket on my Gen 1 and it will not seal properly. Not sure if this is the actual problem of the water leaking in through that hole, but its suspect.

That's what I suspected as well L14s. It also goes by the name Mercruiser Frankendrive.
...and honestly I wouldn't be surprised if that is a speedo pickup tube opening for an Alpha One Gen2 Gimbal Housing. Time for some JB Weld to plug the hole.

Hopefully this video works. I’m thinking I may go with AsLan7 suggestion to patch up the hole in the Frankendrive! But let me know what you all think of the video.
I would NOT recommend just plugging up the hole. it looks like its the bellows drain hole. So either you have a leak in your rubber gimbal bellows or the gasket has failed thats in between the outdrive and the transom helmet. I would highly recommend pulling the boat out of the water and pull the outdrive off to see whats going on.
Again, you have a mix matched alpha outdrive, so you're already playing with fire.

Wow. Seeing that water flowing into the boat while it's just sitting there without the engine running is a serious situation Steve. I would pull her out and check your bellows. It could also result in catastrophic damage to your bearings. You've got a leak somewhere. Git r' checked by a marine tech as soon as you can. They can do a complete diagnostic of the outdrive, fluids, impeller, and filters in addition to replacing cracked bellows.

AsLan and Lockey -- thanks for the advice. I need to ride it about 2 miles (10 min?) to a local boat ramp to get her out of the water (currently on a boat lift) Should I plug the hole with something temporary to get me there? Do the bilge pumps also pump water from the motor well?
Tell me if I gut suckered on this deal -- the interior is in great shape - no tears, bimini top in good condition, cover. All gauges, etc work as they should. Temp, RPMs, everything running in the right range. Boat ran well up until I noticed the leak. Boat came with a decent 2-axle boat trailer. Paid $4500. Good deal, bad deal, OK deal? I guess it depends on how much this potential gasket failure will cost. I want to learn the basics of boat maintenance, but I think this first issue with potentially cracked bellows and/or gasket is too much for me to handle with YouTube videos. I have a local marine tech I can trailer it to. Any ballpark estimate of what I may be looking to pay for parts and labor?
You should be ok to get it over to the ramp and get it out of the water, I just wouldnt horse around too much since your U joints are spinning in a bath of water lol.
This is all very common stuff for the year of the boat, so you're not a sucker. 4500 is still a good deal for that boat if its in good shape. the motor looks like its in nice shape as well! I would have a marine mechanic go through the whole transom assembly and drive and take care of anything that needs attention. I am never good at estimating repair costs haha, but i would think at most 1k? Depending on what he thinks about your Frankendrive.
OK, if I can keep it around $1K, I will still feel good about the purchase. The hours meter says 525, but knowing this is a Frankendrive, who knows what that really means or if it has any significance.
