Am I asking too much?

Here's a thought for those who like their R7, but not their VP. Instead of buying a new boat with BB, why not just repower with a beautiful blue Merc 520 with B3XR?

Is that even possible? Or are the transom mounts for the outdrives just too different between Merc and VP thus forcing you to repower with the same brand?

Cobalt stopped adding the blue engines because rigging was not very easy and merc demanded very specific things. There is a member on here that used to do this for cobalt.
I believe the transom hole is the same. But lots more after that. Hydraulic steering and so on.

Let’s see it on a new custom fifth wheel Loadmaster trailer behind that F350 too! Please order it with twin 430’s so I can buy it from you in 10 years!

Honestly, if we had a lake house where we didn’t have to launch/retrieve, I would be leaning towards that right now.
When we first upgraded to the R7, it was an issue to retrieve .. now that I’m used to our trailer, we do it in a minute, and I could do it alone if I had to, so bigger doesn’t scare me to the least.
My wife loves the current boat, and doesn’t get the big block twins thing.
Also, the R30 replacement is right around the corner.
I get excited in the summer, and retreat to Florida dreaming in the winter. We’ll see.

My understanding is the modern VPs outperform Mercs by most metrics. Better hole shot, greater efficiency etc.

I have a 350 MAG on my boat. Zero experience with VP to compare it to

There is no doubt the VP outperforms the Merc.
The VP is fast, planes fast, 300 lbs. lighter, easier to winterize, crazy crazy good on fuel..

The one category it doesn’t measure up to is noise. It’s loud to the point of obnoxious. I have to yell at 20 mph.

The extra RPM just isn’t natural to my ears. It’s like it’s stuck in low gear going 30 mph. The engine is extremely loud at simple cruising RPM, where a big block would just be purring along.
Cobalt IMO should be concentrating on better sound management in the motorbox.

Last weekend we spent quite a few hours just cruising on the St Croix River. I agree with you that the VP is crazy loud between 15-25mph. I think most of the noise is from the VP exhaust ports above the props though. My daughter was driving most of the time and she was driving around 20mph and it was pretty loud. Once I got her to speed up closer to 30 then it seems like the exhaust quiets down quite a bit. I wasn’t really paying attention but I think our R5 runs right around 3800rpm at 30mph. It seems like our R5 cruises better around 30-33 better than 20-25 anyway, unless I push the trim tabs down the boat kinda plows through the water at 20mph. I usually cruise with the radio pretty loud so we don’t hear the engine much anyway...
