You Normally can get the bearings and races as a set from autozone or Napa. I'm sure you know the numbers are on the edge of the bearing and race. I don't think I ever paid over $25 for a bearing set. They sell them as a set. Is that a single axle trailer? How long is the boat? What do you tow it with. Your all going to kill me here. If it's not that big and you use a truck. Do you really need brakes. I'm sure they haven't worked in years. Do you have a brake controller in your vehicle? Lots of single axle trailers don't have brakes. But hey yours does and if you want to replace them let's get r done.

I wonder if someone put a mobile home trailer axle in that trailer with that brake set up and the rim set up. I haven't seen clamp on rims on a boat? Much less electric brakes on a old trailer like that. Off to me.

The bearings and races should be no big deal, they are cheap and fairly easy to replace.

What's your budget for trailer brakes?

Do those backing plates for the electric drums come off easily? More modern trailers will have a standard flange and bolt-on backing plates, which gives you a lot of options on what you replace with. You can do electric drums again, possibly convert to hydraulic surge brakes, or even go with an electric over hydraulic setup (best IMO) depending on how much you're willing to spend.

I think this might have been a home made job for the trailer. Its about $40 for both the inner and outer bearings and race at brown bearing, but I found them on amazon for about half price. This is for temkin bearings which is my preferred choice.
As far as the breaks go they no doubt haven't worked for a long time. My 98 dodge ram 1500 pulls and stops just fine, and I likely don't need them, however this silly little boat is still over a ton. The boat is a 1972 16' tri-hull.
The pickup is wired for breaks if I need to. Tandem axle trailer.
As far as I can tell I think you might be right about them being mobile home axles.
I believe for the time being I'm just going to do the bearings because I'm betting they all look the same, and being a disabled vet its a chore to do this much work at one time. So I need to take it easy. The one question I do have if you might know is because the wheels mount with 3/4" bolt and wedges to hold it on Do I need to take then to the tire dealer and have them balanced on the drum together???
Maybe later I can remove these antiques and get some real axles and custom wheels.
Thanks for reply.

Ya bearings no prob. I was a roller coaster mechanic for almost a decade before I was physically forced to retire. I also have a degree in hydraulics and pneumatics, so I could build the system fairly easy just time and money is all that will take. I have been concentrating more on the boat for the time being but its time to make sure the hauler can safely haul it lol.

Dale I honestly don't know how you would balance those. I would use balance beads. Much easier and you don't have to worry about them then.

Ya if I had an extra $20k+ sitting around I could have a wicked cool one made. LOL the boat only cost $1k with the trailer and $10k spent since I bought it. That was do to the fact I had the local cobalt dealer do the work, and everything cobalt is typically more costly than not lol.

Right that must be a common number I think T555500000 has that much in his too.lol
Your boat looks sweet though. Well worth the money to put into it. Nice job.

I agree about its worth. I will have a lot more into it before I'm done. This boat is the 191st 16' built. They only made 209, and 1972 was the first year that cobalt started selling there boats as a production model to the public.
I know it's not worth much to many but I grew up on this style cobalt and that makes it worth much more to me. And besides It can still do almost 45 mph. This boat is just to fun and I plane to show it again this year if I can in the antique boat show up hear in Podunk north Idaho. lol
