Yep just turn the cap. Try push down and turn. I bet it's empty.
I just filed mine. It's identical. There's 2 tabs across from each other. The screws you removed I think just hold the sensor to the cap. Don't need to remove it.

Thanks for the quick response! Did you have to do anything with those tabs? I've tried pushing it down like you said, it doesn't seem like there's any give.

No I just turned the top cap. Actually one side wouldn't lock in place.

Beware depth finder...mine is most untrustworthy also. All over the place regularly also.

Mine is back working after the fluid exchange to the transducer. Yea! $5 fix

Anybody know where the transducer should be located on my 1999 Cobalt 232? I've crawled all over the boat looking for it and can't seem to find it. I have the original depth finder gauge, but it either sits blank and doesn't tell me anything or it shows a number that's impossible for the lake I'm in, so I'd like to see if it's a fluid issue.

I can tell you on my 2002 262 the factory one was under the motor.

Starboard side of the bilge under the oil pan of the engine. The cap turns off. Maybe a 1/8 of a turn. Is prob low or out of fliud. It holds about 72ml of fliud.
It may look like this. Prob a airmar transducer.

Ok, I found this and I don’t think it opens, so maybe mine isn’t original.

That looks like it Mr. H.

Make sure it’s filled with anti freeze (if you can open it) and check that your gauge is reading feet and not fathoms.

Yea that's the old style. So you may be updating yours.

Funny you ask AsLan7! This spring I replaced it with a new, but the same model transponder. It is still not accurate. I have found a few adjustments to make at the gauge, but I've pretty much given up on it. I don't understand why it's so difficult. Where I boat it's very shallow so it's something I'd love to have working.

Hmmmm

Ours is only inaccurate when we are around weeds or sea grass in the bay where the depth sounder can’t get a solid ping to return. 🤔

Other than that it’s been accurate after the top off of antifreeze fluid.

Sometimes if aeration is happening below the transducer or its shooting thru air spaces (like a honeycomb structure) it will read inaccurately.
