Will that's kind of a Volvo secret. They don't do it like mercury does. F6 is the next one up and f4 is the next one down. I think it equals 22p or 19p. Matt will chime in he's the prop calculator pro. Again without wot rpm is hard to say if your reaching max mph.

Hey Jud. Glad you got the info.

Keep in mind 7.4l Volvo was rated 310 hp so all your ratios and gears are for sea level.

Yes the F5 prop is equal to about 22-23 pitch.

I'm still thinking your able to see 47mph if rpms touch 4500. ( and prop edges are clean)

Tgrace has seen 53 with his but he carries 65 more base horsepower so in effect you guys have good combos.

So many variables can reduce rpm as BB states , let's get the tach working. A bit soon for a compression test but let's get the tune up to speed and we'll close in on it!!

Rpm eguals mph as we may carry a good cruise speed but "Wide open" can't pull.

Tach... tune...and we'll find you $peed!!

Ok... not sure where to start on tach. I checked back of gauge and wires seem secure. Not sure if next step is to just replace the gauge?

I haven't played with your engine set up in years. Any pictures of your engine and the distributor. Could be a connection on that. Otherwise yes it could be a gauge.

I cant find where the wires for the tach connect to the engine. Ideas on where to find this? I suspect I'll find them secure, so next step will be to replace gauge

Jud.. typically " green" is the signal wire while not to be confused with grey witch is almost always lighting.

Look behind your tach and look for loose or dark discoloration or even corrosion in the terminals.

If so. Snip a inch and make new connections.

Now to the engine compartment ( yes as BB says pics would help but let's try)

Look for a black harness that would've almost look like a round black trailer connecter in size. It's behind the engine breaker panel. Usually.

They typically have a outer ring that works loose so start there and find the green wire going back.

Sometimes removing that plug and " pulling out and in several times" renews the pin contact as result of years of vibration and corrosion.

Yes this trick usually wakes up a lot of gauges going haywire!

And Jud.. disconnect the batteries as I'm sure your carful but boats aren't friendly with 1 big breaker!

Now if after all items are verified and green is found to the tach amplifiers or coil connection it time to hook up the batteries.

Ignition and crank should have a pulse or signal if you are test light handy you may have to test the back as well.

The down side is burning a impeller up so you may have to keep muffs on the drive while your doing you final cranking for testing.

And possibly a known good tach 8 cy 12v . That before sending it for repair or just buying " hopefully finding a new gauge.

Hell we'll just mount a old school Sun super tach and call her good 😊!

Geeze I'm old
