Update: I have had some email exchanges in the past week with Volvo Penta customer service. I was told (after the woman I spoke to on the phone consulted with the "engine" department) that there are no torque/HP curves for the 380/430 motors. Obviously that can't be true, but there must be some reason why Volvo Penta doesn't want to share the information. I was referred back to Cobalt boats for more information. That doesn't help, because Cobalt said they didn't have that information either.
Without additional information on the torque rating for the 380 (as compared to the 350) I ordered a 350 for my R3.
Yea the 350 has to be better. It's got a smaller number. Bob go big or go home. You won't regret it. I take all of those numbers with a grain of salt. If they want to post it as 400hp they will just change the numbers and say that. The car manufacture do that all the time. How many factory dyno numbers do you see.

Sorry BB, the engine choice for my order locked today and I advised the dealer that I will stay with the VP 350. He knows this is a 3 to 4 year boat for me and then I'll move up to an R6 and just for you, I'll order it with the yet to be sighted on this forum VP430 and provide a review.
For what its worth, the dealer says the VP 350 is the right value/performance choice for the R3.

Congrats. I'll hold out for the r6. Get captains call though.

OK, That is just too loud for me! I'll get the regular exhaust and sell you the boat with a hole saw?

Bob. Come on that is why it's Captains choice. You can leave it closed. I like it to be factory installed. Boy who knows what they will have in years for power.

Still no one can find torque numbers for the 6.2, I wonder why it’s so top secret.

Does Mercruiser publish theirs? If they do, then the only reason I can come up with is that the VP 380 doesn’t compete on low end torque or that it doesn’t produce much more at the bottom end than the 350. That would make selling a 380 over a 350 for $6,000+ Difficult. But, on the other hand, who knows the real reason.

Going from a 5.3 to a 6.2 is huge. Don't kid yourself. 380 at a min is the way to go in my r3 3 year old boat

Without the numbers or a third party review of the 380 vs 350, no sale (for me). Anyway it’s done. The last decision I’m going back and forth on is where to do a red borrow with white boot stripe and Nancy hull, or just leave it as is with a white bottom, re stripe and black hull. I’ve got a couple of weeks ago decide.

First one is a gm 5.3 used in the gmc model trucks.

Second is the same truck with a 6.2. So as you can see about 80ft-lbs more or torque. Now I know the marine engines probably use a different cam and others. But gives you a ball park. To me worth the 6k. Actually probably about 4500 after discounts. You will easily make that money back in resale. Look at the boats that sit on the used market. They have smaller engines

Nice graph. Lays out curves as there’s no substitute for cubic inches

I’m old school bob so try this:
5.3 is 324 ish cubic inches (bore 3.78 stroke 3.62)
6.2 is 377 ish cubic inches ( bore 4.06 stroke 3.62)
Your 6.2 design lays out better for higher sustainability in rpm. Just my opinion, but it’s seems we forget these are Automotive engines that once we put them under a sun pad we scream them at 4000 rpms all day. Wouldn’t dare do that in your car would you?
Just think about a 380 6.2.

The option has locked already. I’ll just have to suffer with the 350. Maybe in the next boat.

No way. They don't drop the engine in till the last step before Katie's water tank test. You have time. Don't let us down. You will make another fellow Canadian verry happy next year. Maybe even Colin!

yeah, I could see them pushing back iust you wanted to spend less than the original agreement, but I've never met a retailer that argued over adding to the bill. Get the bigger motor, the internet demands it!
