What a beautiful combo!! Your scored a nice one, and we expect a full captains report on her handling and speed.

Air bags and your good to go!!
I don't want to play towing police but I want to throw this out there so the OP can make his own informed decision.

The OEM hitch on the F150 is only rated to 500lb tongue weight / 5000lb trailer weight when you are not using a weight distributing hitch. The new Ranger is actually rated higher, crazy right?

The F150 online community has created numerous threads debating why the Weight Carrying rating is so low when the hitch is rated at 1,250lbs/12,500lbs with weight distribution. Most think its Ford covering their ass, but the rating is what it is. The Airbags will fix cosmetics of the squat, but you are still technically over the rating of the truck.

Take it for what it's worth, I am not an engineer. I Think the 5,000lb rating is total crap as weight distribution doesn't change the pulling force put on the hitch. Most people think Ford said 500lbs behind the rear axle takes too much weight off the front of the truck we will limit it there and 10% of that is 5,000lbs lets just use that. Another thing to keep in mind is Ford only made one rating for all F150's. There is no way the longer crew cab trucks will not handle tongue weight better than the shorty regular cabs.

I got crazy and weighed our tongue, we are right at 525lbs. That is just enough to take the factory rake out of the truck and level it out. We are way over the 5,000lb limit, but have never had a problem, the EcoBoost is a towing beast.

Like I said I don't want to play towing police, but also didn't want you just throwing airbags on it saying the squat is gone so I am good. Honestly the 1/2 Ton Trucks are designed to squat from the factory, its why there is rake built into the suspension and is what gives you such a great ride when you are using your truck to get groceries.

How much is yours sitting down? It's hard to tell from that picture, but it honestly doesn't look horrible.

Oh and as A7 said awesome looking and optioned boat, be careful he may come steal that from you when you are not looking.

This is true, it doesn't change the total load, but it does change the way the load is applied to the hitch. With weight distribution, there is much less torque around the axis of the hitch across the beam of the vehicle.

Still, though, I agree - dumb.

OK like I said I am not an engineer, explain this to me like I am a 2 year old. I took physics but still can't tell you if an airplane would take off if it was accelerating on at treadmill.

The WDH acts as a lever and pushes some of the tongue weight to the front of the truck and a bit back to the rear wheel of the trailer. The trailer still weighs what it weighs so the force required to pull it forward on the hitch will still be the same? What am I missing?

The only difference when launching a plane on a moving runway (or treadmill) at the same speed in the opposite direction is that the wheels will spin at twice the normal rate. 8-)

(The wheels on an airplane are free wheeling. The jet (or propeller) will "suck (or pull)" the air to accelerate the plane forward independent of the treadmill.)

Sorry, the pilot in me couldn't resist. ;)

Not to hi jack but help the dumb guy out here A7. I get the wheels turning thing but if the plane stays stationary (iethe treadmill allows the wheels to turn but totally negates forward movement) where does the airflow over the wing come from to initiate lift?

Btw I agree factory weight ratings on hitches drive me crazy

It does seem confusing at first S55330. Then when you realize airplane wheels are free spinning and don't do anything in terms of thrust, it starts to make sense. The forward thrust from an airplane is independent of the wheels since the plane is using air to pull/push forward (or reverse at times). Basically for a plane, it doesn't drive on the ground, it "drives" in the air.

Mythbusters covered this about 10 or 11 years ago. More info here if interested. 8-)

Thanks a7. I get the wheels being nothing more than a carrier but my head still can’t grasp it. I remember the myth busters episode. What’s next? You’re gonna tell me the earth is round?

It's about airflow over the wing. No airflow, no lift.

I loce this thread. A guy asks about two boat models, gets one, and now you guys have twisted off talking about flying treadmills and F-150s! Where is Liquid when I need him?

Beautiful boat, nothing ages better than white. I think you found a real gem. My f150 eco max tow tows my 292 with no issues, even out of the hills and hollers of the Lake of the Ozarks. I was going to make the several hour drive to my farm to get my Dodge 3500 but I didn’t need it.

Is that sport stripe black or blue? Hard to tell
Cobalt 292, white with blue sport stripes, twin Volvo 5.7’s.
