I was based in JFK when NWA first got the B747-400 and then followed the airplane to DTW where I remained until retirement. I bet Don was SEA/ANC based on the B747 Classic, so our paths didn't usually cross except for the Narita breakfast club!

Its sad, but age gets us all! I would have stayed but the FAA says I am too feeble the day I turned 65.

It seems such a shame to discard all that talent and expertise at 65. I've known many pilots that are in enviable shape at 65 years old. At least you could still do General Aviation if you wished. In my view that 747 was the very best we ever had. As an Engineer, I have done many projects for the Boeing company and I can tell you for sure that quality was their number one requirement. The last project I ever did for them was the spar and wing plant for the 777 in Washington.
