My kids still can't believe I slept outside all night while waiting in line to buy U2 tickets. Yes, outside the National Record Mart in the late 80's.

And that concert was worth the cold hard pavement on which we slept.

The things we all used to do to see a show.. you probably had a riot that night..

We just saw U2 two weeks ago!
Those guys still put on a great performance..

In '77 I bought a full rack mounted McIntosh system. Paid over $6000 for it, that was a wad of cash for a 22 year old. All hand made and analog with tubes. Had it for 4 years and it was stolen along with 2 Les Paul's and an amp. Still brings tears to my eyes.

What I ponder is how today's music wants to sample and insert pieces of the music I grew up loving. It's like hey, I can't think of any great guitar licks right now, I'll just steal these, throw them on a loop, and sing rap over them. No one has any problem with that. Growing up, you thought up your own or you covered the song playing as close to the original as possible to show respect.

But, that said, some of it sounds cool.

Oh man, driller, that' hurts. And as a 22 year old, you probably did not have any type of homeowners insurance rider. I'm sorry man. That equipment is worth some serious moolah today.

I'm actually a big Bob Carver fan and own quite a bit of Carver and Sunfire pieces in addition to McIntosh. The Carver LIGHTSTAR powers our ribbon speakers. We crank 9.2.2 channels of Roger Waters "The Wall" and the neighbors walls shake as well.

You know, today's kids don't know that some of the great 70's song riffs that are being stolen... I mean "reprised" for making the foundation of a current rap song aren't from the rapping "artist". The stuff is so old, that they think the current artist wrote it..

But after watching "Straight Out Of Compton, I do have huge respect for those guys breaking some serious ground. Dr. Dre and Ice Cube are incredibly talented in so many ways.

I think the real musical talent lays with writing. That separates musical talent from musician. There are a million excellent musicians, but very few inventors or writers. In the golden era, those great bands wrote, and sometimes produced their own stuff. That always was, and still is the way I rate current talent. If you didn't write it, then get lost.....Justin Bieber and other current boy bands who come and go...

Today, you have a pretty faced dancer who can sing, and a group of writers working for the label in support of the singer.
Ofcourse, at the risk of not sounding ignorant, there are always a new crop of song writers, and a talented group who are definitely connecting with the current generation. Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift to name two....and in keeping with other talented creators, both are certifiable..
I took my family to see Justin Timberlake last year, and that was an outstanding show. Going to see Bruno on Thursday. Flying my daughter in for it.

One of the best concerts I ever saw was Boston back in the 70's on their first tour. They didn't go out again for a long time. It was amazing.

But my favorite then and now is ZZ Top. Those three guys make an incredible sound for only 3 guys. I heard Billy Gibbons in an interview one time and they asked about his playing. He said he once shared a dressing room with BB King, and asked about his strings. Up to that point Billy used fat strings on his guitars to get that blues sound. When BB played his guitar he asked "why you working so hard? " He said he used 8/43 gauge stings. Billy went to 7/41's and has played them ever since.

I have a buddy that I grew up with that is like A7, he collects and build vintage systems and has 5/different setups in his shop/man cave. One of them has a gazillion watts and speakers that are 4' tall and came out of the zoo ampitheater. I always take earplugs when I go over there.

Back in the day when we were roommates I got to listen to all the stuff he would put together. Now his playlist is crazy.
10,000 plus songs... All categorized into separate genres and numbered. That probably why I never had anything much more than a radio... Until now

I've seen ZZ Top more times than I can count. After all they are "that little ol' band from Texas". Met Billy in a bar in Houston one night, he was a very nice guy. Saw them on the Tejas tour when they had the live longhorn cattle on the stage. Must had slid them a little something, they weren't reacting to the loud music at all.

I definitely prefer the singer / songwriters. Lot's of that in Austin and surrounding area. I think it takes a great imagination, or a lot of hurt inside to write the kinds of songs that move people, or that can take them to another time and place. IMO music is the most powerful drug on earth. It has always been a huge part of my life.

Not sure if you knew this but Stevie Ray died 2 hours south of me at Alpine Valley after a concert 1990.That is where all of our big concerts were held up to this year. I've seen a ton there when I was 18& up. I love Boston as well. I got a chance to see them this year. I saw journey this year also. I said wth. Great shows. Saw Van Halen a few years ago with David Lee. I will say I'm not a Eddie fan but he is the best guitar player I've ever seen. His fingers were bleeding all over his guitar and he just kept going. I saw Billie Joel twice down there as well. Great shows. I have lots of favs. I like most music.

Eddie is truly one of the greats. I was surprised to learn that be once asked for guitar lessons from Glen Campbell acording to Alice Cooper, who was great friends with Glen. Alice is a pretty cool cat too. I met him at Barrett Jackson. He's a big car guy and usually sells one there every other year or so.

I ran into them at a real small venue at the lake one weekend a few weeks back and became friends with Rachael Fields. She is a mix of Aretha Franklin, Stevie Nix and Etta James. They play in Fayetteville every Wednesday night and she invited me to bring my Sax and come set in with them sometime! She said folks come and play with them all the time on Wednesday. They're really good. She mixes blues, gospel, country, jazz, praise and worship, major and minor scales and SOUL in her song writing and singing.

I knew that was where he died, but I didn't realize it was close to you BB. The whole town of Austin mourned his death, we considered him a treasure. Especially after he had cleaned up and was encouraging others to do the same, right straight from the stage. There is a bronze statue of him close to Lady Bird Lake with a guitar. The pegboard is rubbed smooth.

Hadn't ever heard of her, but I like her sound. Really soulful. She's got a top notch band backing her also. Thanks for turning me on to her. I'll share with others. I really like the tune "Someday Soon".
