I do find it interesting that no one has shown a performance video yet for driver reactions. One thing I thought I noticed in the second video was the amount of porpoising in the R6 when driven by the R5 owner....it could be a trim issue or it could be a deadrise issue. Can't tell from the video but it just doesn't look as smooth as the R5 in videos. Did anyone else notice the only boats so far that have been shown have the same two-tone tan interior (at least I think so).

Secondly, as pointed out, no twins--which according to my conversations with sales people, isn't even on the radar I/O or OB. This boat will have an eggbeater at some point and having a round cowl cover is going to add to the confused look of the angular line. As mentioned earlier, I am surprised twin 4cyl turbo haven't shown up yet. Yamaha for example has a 1.8l supercharged marine engine that puts out 250hp....x2.....well the math is easy. Weight might be equal to or less than a single big block. Now, it won't sound like a big block, but it shows the technology is there---heck, they could always pipe the preferred engine sound through the speakers like many car manufacturers are doing now---that would make it all better, right? I'm sure there are some challenges to making it work with stern drives vs jet drives, but still, the point is you don't need the huge displacement you once did for HP. I have no clue on the torque curves. I'd say it's more likely the transom would need additional reinforcing to hang twin drives.

I'm a relative newbie to Cobalt boats but has Cobalt, in the past put twin stern drives in a. about with an 8.5" beam? When I look in the engine bay of my boat, I wonder how they would fit two in side by side.

As to outboards, while the dealer may not have information, the spec sheet I have indicates there will be OB and FWD options for this platform. As to the round cowls and angular interior lines of the R6, there is nothing to say an angular cowl can't be made for the Ons. I think there are several out there already - more modern looking in my opinion.

Ok, so I admit, I'm spending more time than I would like on watching R6/R5 videos and I have a theory on the deadrise. If you watch the R6/R5 video, it looks like the R6 nose sits a little higher on plane and may have slightly less water contact on the sides just aft of midship. Now, we know there is a different center hull profile at the rear based on mulitple pictures. Could that have flattened the edges in the rear and compensated for it with a deeper center section? That might allow for a bigger wave at lower speed for surfing, but still lets the boat "cut through" wakes at higher speed when you aren't surfing? Just a thought.

I have nothing to support this, other than a feeling but I can relate to the R5 owner in the video saying that based on his experience so far with Cobalt, he feels people can trust them to do the right thing moving forward. This boat is a departure from what we've become used to over the past 7 years. its not uncommon for people to be apprehensive of the change. The good news is that Cobalt will be producing the R5 alongside the R6 for a while and before they stop production, I have no doubt there will be published prop charts and reviews. So, people who were looking to move up to a 25' boat will still have choice within Cobalt for a while.

There have several posts about the significance of the change in dead rise. But ... we haven't heard from any marine architects, hull designers on this forum, so I think we have quite a few "experts" opining on what the 3 degree change at the transom will do. Cobalt didn't just make one change to the hull and no doubt they computer modelled the hull design before making a mold. Did it turn out according to plan? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Cobalts own video indicates there is less wetted surface on this hull, so no doubt that was done to make it as quick as the old boat despite the weight gain. Who knows what other changes will affect the ride and handling? As to the attitude of the bow while running, that could be correctly observed or it could be one boat with a full tank of gas and the other being 1/2 full or 1/4 full, giving less bow up position while running. I've noticed the difference in my R3 is considerable depending on how much fuel is in the tank. I seldom run it with more than 2/3 of a tank.

Well the harbor got their first r6 in. No comments yet on how it performs as they just unpacked it yesterday and that was it’s maiden voyage.

It looks really big in that pic.

Maybe just the pictures but it doesn’t look as angular in the water.

Just got back from a R6 walkthrough. Boat was in the showroom so, like others, still very curious about how it will handle on the water. Wife and I were impressed with it. The entire transom and especially swim platform is an upgrade. Considering we spend my much of our time back there, it was definitely a check in th3 “yes” column. One interesting point is the gunnel is wider so I led be curious to see how interior volume compares with the R5. Didn’t feel any smaller inside - so this might be picking the pepper out of the fly sh*t matter, but it was noticeable.

Another observation is that has less storage space throughout and I'm not sure what the point of the 2 access points to the ski locker is.

The current R series ski locker is deep and pretty long. Sometimes when boating in rough water articles can shift forward (fenders, etc) maKing them hard to reach. Double access will help with that.
